General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Maybe you and Vlad should ask Larry Bevand to set up a private forum for just you two... either that or get a room.
Stop hijacking every thread.
I am done with him. Let him spend his money and come to the series of horrifying realizations that he will eventually come to if he is foolish enough to proceed. Been there. Done that. Got the t-shirt.

With all your foolish self-incrimination, you'll be lucky if the t-shirt isn't taken off your back, lol! Now run off with your tail between your legs.
Ohhhh, man, it's just too easy sometimes!
Only the rushing is heard...
Onward flies the bird.

You embellished your profile resume on chessbase.com to make your academic credentials seem more impressive than they actually are. I haven't seen your resume but you claim on chesstalk that you have done the same thing on your resume. Of course given your propensity for lying it is quite possible that your resume says nothing of the sort. Your libel lawsuit threats are ridiculous given your behaviour on chesstalk. You are doing far more damage to the possibility of someone wanting to work with you with your postings on chesstalk than I am doing by pointing out your lies and inconsistencies. I certainly would not ever want to work with you on anything. HTH.
Have your lawyer send me the usual cease and desist letter and I will publicly mock it and you and your lawyer just like I did the last time someone sent me one of those. If he is a good lawyer maybe he will even honestly explain to you the difficulties that you face.
Which Canadian Championship are you referring to? If you are referring the Canadian Open, there have been feelers for an August date. There are no definite plans for the Canadian Closed aside from the determination that there will be a zonal tournament in time for the next world championship cycle even if we (members of the directors) have to organize it ourselves.
Who was invited to the American Continental after the nominee withdrew? This question went unanswered earlier.
The nominee withdrew after the deadline and thus we were not able to send another official player.
Does the CFC have anything to offer chess players after they turn 20 years of age?
We offer a rating system, access to CFC and FIDE tournaments, an email news magazine and the services of a national federation recognized by FIDE.
Youth chess supports itself and so does adult chess.

I'm referring to the Canadian closed championship. When I was a governor most of us governors were capable of organizing such an event.
How hard can it be to organize an RR of the highest rated players who want to participate?

It's easy to organize an RR tournament. It's much harder (and requires a lot of sponsorship) to make it attracting enough for Canada's top players to participate.
If the CFC was willing to help financially, as it did in 2011, I am sure finding organizers would not be hard.

As a Zone, I feel it's the responsibility of the CFC to put up some cash if necessary. Organizing the Canadian closed is part of the cost of doing business, the way I see it.
I see the lack of a player at the American Continental as a problem. We've had players qualify for the WC knockouts from that event. For those kind of events the person attending should have to pay a refundable amount of money which will only be returned if s/he attends and completes the event. Someone missed a great chance to qualify to play in the WC knockouts.

Gary. When we posted that we were looking for players to come forward, we only had a single player interested. The CFC doesn't have a budget line for the transportation to this event. Maybe we should ...

Fred, it is a premier event simply because of the opportunity to advance to the WC knockout event. We've had a player qualify from that event twice in a row, if I'm recalling correctly. Even losing in the first round of the WC knockout gives a player a cash prize.
I think there should be a refundable appearance fee required from our nominee for the simple reason that the entry precludes finding someone else.
Maybe there should also be a budget item for that event.
For some of our players making it to the WC knockout stage will be once in a life time. Something to tell their grandchildren. We can't be passing up golden opportunities for a qualifier.
Out of curiosity, what is of more cost to host a Canadian Closed:
Option a) A round robin tournament
Option b) An "open" type tournament restricted to only 2200+ players
you are not actually asking the right question.
the actual organizing cost of the RR is smaller (smaller venue) but more of a pain (hard to get the players to commit).
But, historically at least, the RR has no entry fee whereas the Swiss does (all those close to 2200 are valued only for the entry fee they bring).
The actual organizing costs are relatively small (a few $K or possibly very low if a free venue is available and pro bono TD)- the real problem is that a) there is an expectation of prize money these days and b) the CFC wrote into it's rules that the organizer must also provide free accommodation (and entry) to certain players. Those are the real costs.
I would say that option b) would probably require at least $3000 in sponsorship to have something similar to what we did in 2012 ($6000 in prizes).
Option a) would probably require more sponsorship, as players would not play if the prize fund is not big enough. We are talking of a deficit of at least $5000.
As Roger Patterson just said, in addition to the prize fund the organizers must also provide free entries, free accomodation and appearance fees for GMs.
