        Re: Gibraltar 2015

Pairings are up and I must say I'm already looking forward to the board 11 matchup with Kevin Spraggett and the 18-year-old chess iconoclast, Richard Rapport. Victor Plotkin is on board 27 against his 4th consecutive GM, Benjamin Bok. Eric Hansen is on board 33 and has yet to play a single GM ):

Damn! I had hoped to see what kind of dog they were going to make Spraggett tomorrow but there's no line on his game against Rapport at the moment. Muzychuk fans can get 12/1 odds on either sister. Given the draw odds on the Harikrishna - Lenderman game, 28/25, I'm more than a bit surprised that Lenderman is also a 12/1 dog.

Richard Rapport is playing in his wont iconoclastic manner, 2. ...f5 and 8. ...h5, so it certainly appears his game with Kevin Spraggett will be an entertaining affair (:

And Nakamura is yet again playing an opening you wouldn't want to show a chess student. Seven straight pawn moves to start his game, giving up an exchange in the process (:

R6 pairings are now available. Kevin, Victor, and Eric are on boards 27, 28, and 31. Victor gets to play his 5th consecutive GM while Eric still awaits his 1st GM pairing. Victor has picked up a whopping 33.8 FIDE points through 5 rounds (:

After five rounds, Nakamura stands alone at the top.

ChessBase – “Hikaru Nakamura is the only person in Gibraltar to keep his perfect score, and he did so with uncompromising and aggressive chess. Baskaran Adhiban simply was not up to the challenge; he got lost in the complications and by move 18 Naka's deadly pawns reached the 3rd rank (!). Tomorrow will be a showdown of monsters, as Hikaru Nakamura takes on the top player with 4.5: Veselin Topalov.

On board two it looked as if Renier Vazquez Igarza had a very good position against Wei Yi. Slowly, the Spaniard let go of his advantages until he started to lose what seemed like an unlosable endgame.”

But draw after 55..Rxf4. I suppose one of those positions that every Russian schoolboy knows, (Chinese and Spanish schoolboys too).

Coverage by Alejandro Ramirez in ChessBase. There is also a picture of Kevin Spraggett:

                        28. Plotkin – Lalith Babu
                        31. Hansen - Khademalsharieh
Hansen won, Spraggett drew, Plotkin loss. Too bad, with Spraggett watching on the next board I was hoping for Victor to win a long, drawn endgame.

With Topalov's loss to Nakamura today and Giri's win in the Bundesliga, Giri is now #4 in the world.

My first three alternate choices for 2016 WCC Challeger (no particular order): Caruana, Giri, So - the new younger (!) generation. And Carlsen will have trouble!

Anyone you'd take out, and substitute?

I feel that there should be a Chinese challenger in the top five in a year’s time but find myself utterly unable to make a choice!
