General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
The Swiss system is designed to produce a winner. It is unfair to all others: some will get more blacks, some will play more of the highest rated players.
Also kids ratings are very unstable. Given some free time and a coach their strength is always higher than their rating.
As there are not many FIDE rated events the CFC or FQE or CMA rating is more accurate. But in publishing on the Chess Results website FIDE ratings only, not the ratings used for pairings.
Paul anytime you post this is the only response you'll be getting."I see you haven't been introduced to mr. Bonham. You can't expect anything remotely related to common sense from him. "
I know you are, but what am I? :D
Only the rushing is heard...
Onward flies the bird.
It does seem so hard to say sorry, I made a mistake, but nobody is perfect. There was much chaos before the event. Vlad is a great organizer donating 1,000s of hours.
It seems to me that «great organizing» and «chaos before (or during) an event» cannot go together. «Chaos» is synonymous with poor organizing.
Playing up was on the agenda in 2012 and both I and Aris argued against allowing playing up but having lost the argument applied the decision of the then governors.
You are supposed to wait five years before bringing up substantially the same matter according to the NFP act.
imho, the NFP act should start a new start. As it is invalidated the Handbook (per our discussion on the Governor's forum http://www.chesscanada.info/forum/sh...andbook-status (the link valid only for Governors')

Well this is the CFC after all. When the president is more focused on using Croatian swear words, referencing Taylor Swift and diversion than actually responding to the people that keep the CFC running (thorough membership fees), I think that speaks volumes on his character, credibility and integrity.

The people that keep the CFC running are the organizers who hold the tournaments and to a lesser extent the players and parents of players who take time from their busy schedules to participate in tournaments.
I have used no Croatian swear words though obviously the point of the aphorism is lost on those who are not self-aware.

You mean like your blind eye to the requests for changes to a process that is flawed (as demonstrated here with the support of many here). Maybe you should practice what you preach because clearly maybe your unaware of whats going on.

It's a symbiotic relationship. We need both in order for chess to be played. When the players are having issues at least tell them your going to create procedures from the CFC's end to fix the problem. Also organizer's should have a policy regarding on what to do and what procedures to follow when a player elects/requests to play up.

I have seen exactly two players out of almost two hundred and ninety complain about something that happened in a section that they were not playing in. I pretty much expected these types of situations to arise out of the decision to allow playing up. This situation was addressed some three years ago by the then governors in a way that I disagree with and I live with the resolution arrived at then. FIDE seems to encourage the action taken with their own rules on playing up. Democracy at work in the CFC.
Addressing this situation is not a priority for me nor any of the voting members since they don't seem to be interested. The notion that the solution is to regulate every aspect of some particular tournament is what has put us in the current situation where where have trouble getting people to organize even our flagship tournaments. The abuse heaped on organizers on these threads is not helpful in encouraging the Windsor organizers or any other organizers to step forward and risk losing tens of thousands of dollars only to receive abuse by ignorant people.
Without players, there would be no tournaments for organizers to organize.
That doesn't give you the right to abuse instructors, organizers, arbiters and tournament directors, or CFC presidents. You've actually done me a huge favour because you and your membership have certainly been a disproportionate drain on my time as a CFC President (not to mention our rating auditor and FIDE rep) between the complaints about the USCF rating adjustment, the lack of FIDE rating of one game that happened in a different country and the countless phone conversations that I had with your father over the last two years. No more cutting to the head of the line. You can go through the regular channels from now on. I won't be involved any more.

Maybe your ignorant to the fact that the players your citing (me and another) have said before we have no objections to anyone playing up, we wanted procedures to be implemented next year that prevent these issues from happening, regarding prior notice.
No abuse has been intended toward anyone. Questions were clearly asked about those aforementioned issues and you and my father had good dialogue in regards to those issues handled with dignity and class on both ends. I could go into a war seeing who can pull up more dirty laundry, but I guess as a 15 year old I have more class not to do so vs. a grown adult.
When a simple question was asked about creating guidelines to prevent further situations like this from happening you come up with this? Impressive, what's next?
Asserting that prior notice is an issue does not make it one. You are welcome to find a voting member to take up this cause, draft a motion and get it on the agenda in a timely manner for a vote at next year's AGM. It won't be me.

Tell us one thing: does it really require a Governors' motion to set rules for the CYCC these days? It did not require a Governors' motion to change Canadian Closed tie-breaks (they are carved in the Handbook without any provision to have anything else but matches)

Thank you Anish. I can certainly agree with all your points, diplomatically stated.
Would you be willing to concede that the title of the other thread "2015 CYCC Pairing Manipulation" was somewhat less diplomatic? which only escalated the tension. Entertaining yes, but not productive.
