Computer suggested 15...Bxf2 16 Kxf2 b5 as best. Given that this is hardly decisive can see why this wasn't played considering the event format. There is also the possibility black didn't see it......but somehow I doubt it !!

Mareco cannot possibly have believed the three pieces were better than the queen in that position. What the heck??

A berth in round 3 is worth USD 12,800, net of FIDE tax. Then $20K, $28K, $40K, $64K and finally $96K to the winner.

So is this our best showing since Spraggett in 88?

Indeed it is Garland. In fact this is the first time we survived the first round of the World Cup.

The comparison with Spraggett is interesting. Anton earned his spot in the World Cup at the Continental Championships earlier this year. Spraggett was seeded into the Candidate Matches as a host representative amid much controversy because the deadlock with Ivanov was never settled over the board. Kevin made the very most of his opportunity and showed the world that he belonged on the big stage.

Re: Anton Kovalyov vs. Sandro Mareco

                          Wonderful game by GM Kovalyov!!

It seems GM Mareco mis-evaluated the scenario where White got Black's queen for three pieces. Although material was nominally near equal, White had much more space, a strong centre, and active possibilities, while Black was tied down in a passive position. Kovalyov exploited his trumps in very impressive fashion!! :)

Now he gets a much-needed day off tomorrow, and will face super-GM Caruana (who recently switched his flag to U.S.) on Thursday and Friday!! Good luck and good skill, Anton!!

Does a berth in round 4 get an additional $20K or an additional amount to total $20K? And so on?
