  • Donations for an Aboriginal School

    Hello all,

Myself and a group of students are organizing a campaign named "Books for Change" to provide support to Eenchokay Birchstick School, an elementary Aboriginal school in Northwestern Ontario. Our hope is to donate as many books, board games, toys, etc. as possible. If you would be willing to contribute in any way or know someone that woould, please write me an email at mjysong@gmail.com.

    Much appreciated,
    Michael Song

      Hi Michael:

Nice initiative - I'll email you...I expect you should get some supportive response.

If you make up a flyer, I'd be pleased to put it on the Scarborough Chess Club display table, to help you promote the project. Let me know.

        Good on you Bob!

Michael's effort should be put into the CFC New Feed, etc.. And if the Chess Federation of Canada wants to consider themselves as anything but Canadian lame ... they should seize this opportunity to do good work within the Aboriginal community!

In 2007, after being renovated the school had burnt down. Following this, the community suffered great difficulties and had an enormously high suicide rate. Recently, the school has been rebuilt again, and we chose to donate to this school in order to facilitate this transition. Of course, if we receive more donations than expected, we are planning to donate to even more Aboriginal schools :)

Thanks so much for your response, but I'm still at a loss ... who is the "we" you speak of?

I wholeheartedly support your initiative, kudos once again!

Thanks for the encouragement Neil! The "we" would be myself along with a few other students at my high school involved in this initiative.

                    Awesome, thanks!

SoCA (Society of Chess Aficionados) will commit to your effort. I'll see just how many chess books we can gather up.

Probably a dozen or more, I'll know more by this Monday.

And we challenge the Chess'n Math Association and the Chess Federation of Canada to match the number of books that we donate!!!

Nice selection - I'll also be forwarding to Michael a few of my unused chess library books.

Hope others are joining in.......I'm sure no donation is too small.

I recently saw the movie Queen of Katwai and it occurred to me that chess might be part of the solution to the problems faced by youth in our northern aboriginal communities.
