  • Bator Sambuev and Nikolay Noritsyn to play for Toronto Dragons in Pro Chess League

I have received a request to set up a separate thread for the Toronto Dragons. As mentioned in the Montreal thread, American IM Greg Shahade has moved the U.S. Chess League to chess.com, renamed it the Pro Chess League, and opened it up to teams from cities around the world. The prize fund is $50 000, and the games are played online on chess.com.

IM Arthur Calugar and I drafted masters for a Toronto team, the Dragons. Canadians GM Bator Sambuev, IM Nikolay Noritsyn, GM Thomas Roussel-Roozmon, GM Razvan Preotu, IM Raja Panjwani, FM Shiyam Thavandiran, IM Kaiqi Yang, IM Michael Song and IM Arthur Calugar will be joined by Romanian GM Gergely-Andras-Gyula Szabo, who coaches many of Canada's juniors.

    Toronto Dragons schedule for 2017:
R1 Wednesday January 11 6:45 p.m. EST Montclair Sopranos (with Canadian GM Pascal Charbonneau)
R2 Wed. Jan. 18 6:45 p.m. Montreal Chessbrahs (Fabiano Caruana)
R3 Wed. Jan. 25 6:40 p.m. Columbus Cardinals (IM Atanas Kizov)
R4 Wed. February 1 6:45 p.m. New Jersey Knockouts (GM Alexander Stripunsky)
R5 Sat. Feb. 11 2:55 p.m. London Towers (GM Gawain Jones)
R6 Wed. Feb. 15 6:35 p.m. Patagonia Penguins (GM Fernando Peralto)
    R7 Wed. Feb. 22 TBA
    Playoffs Wed. March 1, 8, 15, 25/26

The games can be watched live on chess.com's Live Chess server, and there will be colour commentary by GM Dejan Bojkov and Irina Krush on chess.com TV.

You can read more about Toronto and the other teams in our division on our Facebook page:

Since it's online games, anyone know what the organizer does to prevent cheaters?

Chess.com has an cheating detection team which will be monitoring all the games. If they are sure a player is cheating, that player will be ejected from the tournament, and their opponents will be awarded the points for the games that player played. If someone's play seems suspicious or they are playing at a much higher level than you would expect, an arbiter will be called in to watch them play, or they will have to set up a camera to show themselves playing. In chess.com's Titled Tuesdays tournaments, a couple of titled players were disqualified for cheating. This rule with the arbiter might be new though.

Thanks Glenn - nice bit of promotion - lots of us have met, or seen many of the players......but some of them, many of us may not have seen for years, since they were younger juniors.....nice to see an update photo.

Dragons GM Bator Sambuev and GM Thomas Roussel-Roozmon are playing in the Pere Noel tournament in Montreal this week. They both won their first round games! We wish them all the best!

I thought only one foreign player was allowed? Bator Sambuev and Thomas Roussel-Roozmon are not from Toronto... at least not to my knowledge, and I am based out of Markham.

Bator Sambuev used to live in Toronto, so the League voted to accept him as a 'local' player.

The pundits are starting to predict Wednesday's results. IM Robert Ris is predicting that the Toronto Dragons will beat the Montclair Sopranos 10-6 with GM Thomas Roussel-Roozmon scoring 3.5/4!

                    https://www.chess.com/blog/RobertRis...k-1-prediction

Similarly, U.S. NM Pete Karagianis is also predicting a Toronto win 9.5-6.5.

                    The excitement is mounting!

Will there be any live games and, if so, where and schedule?

                      Thanks.

Fans will be able to watch all of the games I listed in post #8 in the Live Chess area of the chess.com website. This week the players will just be playing from their homes. If we organize a public event at game time in a future week, I will post about it here, and on Facebook and chess.com.

The U.S. Chess League used to have the players gather in bricks and mortar clubs, and the Pro Chess League may do that for some players or teams this season as well.

Post #8 is a few posts above this one. If you are viewing Chesstalk in Linear Mode, you just have to scroll upwards a bit to see it.

To view the games on chess.com, I believe you need to sign up for a free account by giving them a unique username, your email address, and a password that you should write down somewhere. Once you are a member of chess.com, you can watch the commentary by Dejan Bojkov and Irina Krush on Chess.com TV. Or if you want to follow the individual games, click on Play, and then Live Chess. On Wednesday evenings, if you click on the little binoculars on the right side of Live Chess, you will see a list of games with a time control of 15'+2" and the Dragons playing. I've posted a thread to the forum of the Toronto Dragons Fan Club on chess.com on how to watch the games live.

Next Wednesday January 18th sees the two Canadian juggernauts facing off: the Toronto Dragons versus the Montreal Chessbrahs. Alexandre Lesiege, Aman Hambleton and Lefong Hua were playing for the Chessbrahs last night. Come check it out.
