General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I am organizing an air force veterans reunion August 23 to 26 at the Toronto Sheraton Airport Hotel, which also includes a golf tournament on August 24 open to public. It occurred to me today that I have enough event space for a chess tournament as well to compliment the weekend.
Would this weekend conflict with any other chess tournaments in the GTA area
?
Is there still enough time to advertise the tournament
?
Would need a CFC tournament director to help organize the event. Format could be 6 round swiss 2 games each day perhaps around $119 entry, $5000 prize fund depending on TD and rating costs.
As part of events occurring at same time could provide complimentary hors d'oeuvres on Thursday evening meet and greet, and a complimentary Sheraton buffet dinner on Friday evening (along with golfers). Coffee, Juice, Water provided outside chess playing room all days.
Also have 30 rooms at Sheraton for rate of $130 single or double occupancy plus taxes. Parking is $10 a day. TTC and Union Pearson Express go to airport , free shuttle bus from Airport to Sheraton hotel every 30 minutes.
There is not much time to get this off the ground so looking for as much feedback as possible on the idea.
Re: Idea for Toronto Chess Tournament August 24,25,26
From a player's perspective, it sounds great.
From an organizer's perspective, what is the expectation of a rental fee for the chess tournament space? That is usually the biggest expense at a chess tournament.
Re: Idea for Toronto Chess Tournament August 24,25,26
Paul, I had requested an extra room (which turned out to be a medium sized ball room ) for the veterans to utilize for playing games assuming people might just want to stay at the hotel and socialize after travelling. This was a new feature for these reunions. Only a few have signed up for the games (we also have golf and horse racing outings which were popular). There is also a giant ball room ( seats 450 , 6 per round table) that can be divided into 4 good sized rooms, one of which could be used for skittles and socializing. So all the event space is taken care, however, I do need to ensure a certain amount of food is eaten over the weekend, could be extra bonus for the players.

Reason: Clarification on size of room
Re: Idea for Toronto Chess Tournament August 24,25,26
John, that's great to hear, how much do you normally pay for a tournament these days, I recall paying $80 or many years ago when I used to play in North Bay. Planning to have RCAF memorabilia in the foyer outside the chess room, there would also be opportunities to interact with veterans who have served on the DEW line who may also be curious spectators to the chess. Tentative name is Foxtrot Tango Golf and Chess Tournament.
Re: Idea for Toronto Chess Tournament August 24,25,26
Would GTA players attend as warm up to labour day tournament? If have other (non chess) plans on Labour day weekend could still get play chess the week before.
Re: Idea for Toronto Chess Tournament August 24,25,26
Most tournaments range around 50-80. I think the Golden Horseshoe tournament is $120 but that comes with a larger prize pool. Your best bet is to find an organizer and TD, as it seems you have the venue down. People will come, players will always find chess tournaments.
Re: Idea for Toronto Chess Tournament August 24,25,26
120 should be the onsite price for Golden Horseshoe , people registered early especially the lower rating section paying much lower, 45 or 65 something like that
Re: Idea for Toronto Chess Tournament August 24,25,26
I really only know Guelph. Hal Bond is the man there. As for other clubs I can’t say. I’ve been spotty with tournaments myself due to work schedule. Another idea is running rapid/blitz time controls so if players prefer that they can choose your tournament and if they prefer standard they can choose Hamilton Open. That way it would de-conflict the interests and keep both tournaments on the same dates. Toronto Blitz Championships usually gets a pretty good turnout running a 3+2 time control.
Re: Idea for Toronto Chess Tournament August 24,25,26
Hal is on Chesstalk and also his contact info is on his Guelph tournament listings if you look up one it’ll be in there. Blitz and Active can be rated as an Active rating which is different from standard rating.
