GM Alexandre LeSiege over the years from chess prodigy (in the 80's) to Olympic veteran and oldest member on the team! Also very nice!

After consultation with the organizers of the Olympiad we have been allowed to make a substitution less than 10 days before the start of the event and after the final date for roster changes. I am pleased to announce that grandmaster Evgeny Bareev will be the replacement player. We are now in scramble mode making transportation arrangements.

I would like to thank Evgeny Bareev for stepping in, in our moment of need.

Is there a minimum number of rated games that an Olympiad team member must play during the year prior to being selected for the team?

There is a rule in normal circumstances. We did try to go down the list of eligible players but Raja Panjwani the next player on the list was unable to attend on such short notice. There are still significant logistical hurdles ahead of us.

This has happened before. Maybe we need to always have a reserve player or two on a standby list.

Not speaking to technical issues or rules but GM Bareev is a huge addition to the team. Happy to see that happen.

I'm not sure it has happened this close to the tournament. Anyway Alexandre's reasons are valid and not something that is under anyone's control. It is quite clear that a few days ago he was planning to attend.

Agreed Hans. If I understand correctly, board order is based on rating so Bareev would presumably play board 1. Thank you GM Evgeny Bareev for doing this on short notice. All Canadian chess players should be grateful.

I understand it was a time-sensitive situation to find a replacement, but it definitely would have been possible to send a quick email to the next few eligible players to see whether they would be able to play on the short notice, and offer the spot to the top eligible player who could play. It’s hard to see how this could take too long.

Now, it’s one thing to want to send the strongest team for Canada, and adding Bareev is definitely a fantastic addition to the strength of the team. But it really raises the question of why define the clear eligibility criteria in the first place? It’s hard to imagine any sport offering an Olympic spot to somebody who didn’t meet an eligibility criteria, at the inevitable expense of someone that did.

The Team Captain selects the board order. If I was a betting man, I would say Bareev will take Board 2, especially since Eric has likely been preparing for months now to take on the Top player from all of the major countries.

Hopefully when we develop the new handbook, it will clearly define how close to the tournament it has to be for "Emergency Measures" to be put into place, and the normal criteria put aside.
