  • Rd 12 Wei Yi! When Wei Yi put his two knights on d5 and d4 I thought it would be soon over, especially two moves later with Nd1! What a picturesque display! How was Black going to defend herself? But no immediate knockout, just a power display! - driving the pawn f4 as it turns out to support the knight e3 and then almost quietly the Alekhine stinger at the end of the combo Rxb4!
The fans are getting a real treat this tournament!

    • In the Giri game subtle points to the strong point. First set up e4 and then use the crow bar (I mean pawn lever) with a5. At the end all whites knights are hanging and f2 as well.

      • In Frioujza Nepo 25.Bxb5+ is a cold shower for Black. Accurate defence by Firoujza garners the point.

        • Warmerdam was too ambitioous and broke his queenside pawn structure too early. This one did not get away from Ding.

          • In Gukesh Pragga I was salivating over the position and thought 38.Nxg7 wins but no. Anyways a lovely buildup by Gukesh on the kingside with some fascinating continuations but apparently Black could defend. Exciting but draw.

            • Rd 12 In Vidit Abdusattarov both sides had nasty tricks. First 18.Bxc6 looked natural and winning but there was a nasty counter tactic with 18...Rc8. White however had great stuff up his sleeve and got to play e6! and Qd7 dominating but both sides continued with small combinations back and forth, a fans dream. Even though Vidit is in the drivers seat there is still a lot of game left to play - a wonderful endgame! The fans rejoice!

              • In the challengers a letdown by Maurizzi as his center got cracked. He made it interesting with some spunky play but ultimately a big upset win by Dardha!

                • Beautifully patient play by Erwin! First the king got centered and weak points were attended to. Notice how the bad bishop became great and white's knight went bad. Lovely way to end the game when you play Ke5 and your opponent resigns.

                  • Stalwart defensive play and counterattack by Mendonca! With that he earns a tie for first!
