How in the world did Anish Giri lose that?? Answer: B4 and C4 pawn levers started the collapse and then some nice active king moves in the knight vs bishop endgame with a dangerous outside passed pawn. Lovely play by Abdusattarov!

As a result we have a three way tie for first with Abdusattarov, Giri and Gukesh all with 4.5 out of 7. We have ourselves an exciting finish to watch!!

In the Challengers Erwin's luck did not hold. He did get his endgame but it wasnt a good one. If that happens its nice if your opponent puts you away brilliantly and with 50...Re3+!! Santos Lataso did so!

Defending rook and pawn endgames is sometimes a delicate art. Hopefully Vrolijk learned a valuable lesson and Deshmukh won a nice endgame!

How did Hans survive that?? (scratches head?) I would call that a lucky draw.

In the Challengers when the leader goes down in flames others usually take over. The new leader is Salem with Korobov, L'Ami, and Maurizzi a half point behind. I have a feeling we will have an exciting finish in this section as well.

In Rd 7 if you want maximum entertainment checkout Maurizzi - Yilmaz. How did Yilmaz save that?

Rd 8 Firoujza shows his stuff against Ding. Actually it is unlike Ding to miss some of those tactics.

Rd 8 Abdusattorov played a bit carelessly in the middlegame and Nepo took a firm grip in the endgame and won.

The other leaders Giri and Gukesh couldnt win and as a result Giri and Gukesh are tied for the lead with Abdusattarov a half point back.

Actually Firoujza after his win is also tied for the lead after 8.

and Abdusattorov is tied with Vidit, Pragga, and Nepo a half point back. Seven players within half a point of each other!

Erwin L.Ami held a draw as black against Hans Niemann. Another endgame. I'm still rooting for you Erwin! Here's for a strong finish!
