General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
That was an excellent link; well written and informative with a scientific author. Who cares what Ruben (GROM) writes; I am just going to ignore him and stick to science, unless he addresses the content of the link directly. The only value in his posts is light comedy. Ignore his posts and we can have a discussion ourselves.
Thanks again for the link...
To other readers of these posts; I highly recommend that you look at Eds link 2 posts back and join in the conversation here; that way we do not have to hear GROM drone on. It has a very good summary of recent changes to the planet from climate change; feel free to ask questions and poke holes in the actual data it presents.
As for GROM and the other ill-informed ludital sceptics, let us see if they can actually address each of the changes addressed in the link or provide some counter data instead of talking slander and baseless cliched generalities.
I see President Obama has decided that America has to drill for domestic oil after all. Perhaps the melting of ice in the North (e.g. Alaska) will make it easier. The oil is running out and I expect that more drilling will happen in previously hostile environments.

I don't expect Obama will tell us he doesn't want our tar sands oil. I think it has become a bit problematic for our government with the increasing Asian investment in our oil sands. To allow it or not to allow it.
The thing is this. When most people invest in resources companies they are mainly interested in making some money in the long run. Many foreign investors are interested in the oil. Taking their share "in kind" rather than taking the money. I don't know how this will effect the interests of Canada and the U.S. in the long run. Also, the mid term elections are coming up and the Republican stance is for "drill baby, drill". Palin appears popular with that stance these days.
You might have read about the extension of the nuclear treaty between Russia and the U.S. This is an important development. If you are familiar with the megatons to megawatts program, this will extend the process for years. I'm not sure how many. The nuclear grade uranium is changed to low enriched uranium and burned in the light water reactors. The U.S. agent for this is Usec Inc. They buy it from the Russian company and it's either in SWU's (Separative Work Units) or turn it into that form. I forget. I was reading this program accounts for 10 percent of the electricity produced in the U.S. and the company is happy about this extension.
To put it in prespective, since our population is about 10% of the U.S. population, that uranium would be enough to produce power for our nation.
I notice Paul wants to dismiss me, however, I feel it's because I know more than he does on a wider range of matters relating to science. When he starts that, it makes him sound like a nasty p**ck stomping his little booty and throwing a fit by berating an old guy he can't fool.
We had some fun on another topic last year. Are you planning on going long the American dollar at any point? I have a number picked out and the ETF to get IF our dollar gets that high.
What matters is what the voters will do with the governmets which are spending megabucks to satisfy the lobby groups for this laughable "science".
Germany and France cut grants for solar and new projects are dropping off.
So who is this blogger that Gary dismisses out of hand:
This post is by guest Blogger Scott A. Mandia, Professor of Physical Sciences at Suffolk County Community College, Long Island, NY. Mandia holds an M.S. Meteorology from Penn State University and a B.S. Meteorology from University of Lowell (now called UMass – Lowell). Mandia has been teaching introductory meteorology and paleoclimatology courses for 23 years.
ahhhh....apparently somebody knowledgable about climate science. :)

I am sure I am in the minority, but I think if the US government doesn't get their fiscal house in order, their dollar is going to implode. At that point I would consider buying some super-cheap real estate. ;-0
This is why I think, regardless of which side anyone is on in the global climate change debate, that in the long-run it doesn't matter as nothing more than window dressing will get done. People have been trained to want the nanny state, they want someone else to pay for it, and they will never plan in advance for anything. People don't worry about their own retirements and how to finance them, so why are they going to worry about planet-wide climate change? Better to just sit back, watch Canadian Idol and shop 'til you drop to keep the Ponzi-scheme economy chugging along.
We are going to see more yapping from government about budgeting and going green. We are going to get more drilling and profligacy.

Tom,
IMHO, most people do not share your defeatist attitude. Most people if given the choice, will do the right thing. For example, recycling programs are very popular. I believe volunteerism is at an all time high, and look at the donations to the Haiti disaster fund.
Defeatism can easily become a self fulfilling prophecy.:(

I guess there are the two main thoughts on the U.S. dollar. Many share your view on the U.S. dollar and treasury auctions failing. Personally, I think it's relative. When you look at the Euro as a comparison, they have their problems. There are a lot of nations involved with the Euro and they aren't all fiscally responsible. I would imagine the weaker U.S. dollar would help U.S. exports and promote tourism. I doubt it will get too low. The U.S. is still a good place to invest. Even if you buy real estate, I'd imagine you would expect the U.S. dollar to strengthen against the Canadian dollar to increase the value or move there. Otherwise you could buy cheap real estate in many other nations.
I also don't think much will get done on climate change. We'll have to see how elections go and if people want to spend public money on it.
There will be more drilling but the problem is that as far as I know Alberta is mainly natural gas once you get away from the Tar Sands. I think they prefer to call it the Oil Sands these days. Of course, it's different now that it used to be. Used to be you drilled straight down, and up came the nat gas or oil like from a straw. Now they drill down, then drill horizontally for another half mile or mile, fracture the rock in about a dozen spots and they get a lot of gas or oil coming up the straw. The problem is the production tends to drop quickly on gas wells so you have to keep drilling to keep up the supply. For an idea of the how much it can drop see Boyle's Law as it applies to gases. When the pressure drops the amount of gas you can get from the pipe will also drop.
I think government will see a big drop in revenue this year. Lower interest rates and people writing off capital losses from last year will likely bring in less tax dollars.
ahhhh....apparently somebody knowledgable about climate science. :)
Surely you can be more assertive than that! "apparently" is a weasel word. Tell us how you really feel.
Y'know, Bob, I can make a case for climate change, against climate change or climate change neutral. It would depend on what I was being paid to do.
As for experts, you only have to look at all the people who were wrongfully convicted of killing children on the sloppy work and the testimony of an Ontario coroner.
1. Put a label on it
2. Paint it on a sign
3. Nail it on a two by four
4. Carry it on the picket line.
I'd prefer that method to Gary's where he just calls everything he doesn't like a bad name and tries to bully it into silence, and follows up his failure by stuffing his foot in his mouth.
But to Gary, facts don't mean much. If a fact is inconvenient he just calls it a bad name and claims that it doesn't exist because his kind of people are ignoring it.
I prefer actual evidence, myself, to either method.. Some others on this forum do as well, I expect, so they might be interested in a link to the article "Earth's five mass extinction events" over at Skeptical Science.
