General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
It looks like a decade long solar minimum is not going to happen at the moment. Warming will likely accelerate over the next few years.
Maybe Europe should stock up on every propellor driven plane that it can get a hold off; these would be safe to fly in ash that would stop a jet engine.
My Norton doesn't load that site and calls it unsafe.
Why not get rid of that weasel word, "likely" and shout out the rest of the sentence? With the word you have made a forward looking statement which means squat because as well as being likely, there's an equal chance it's unlikely.
The problem with the volcanic ash, they way they told it on TV, is the plane pretty much gets sand blasted. The paint comes off the plane. Also, don't propellor driven planes need for the engine to be cooled? The air enters and cools the engine, doesn't it? I'd think heavy ash would clog the cooling system.
I was watching a financial officer from a large bank on TV this morning. She was big on solar energy. The rooftop ones. She says the 20 K outlay would be recouped in about 10 years. Probably they want to loan people the money to install it. Probably the building is the collateral. "Probably" is a weasel word which means. I donno. :)
I firmly believe in evolution theory and there nothing wrong(!) with it.
Roy W. Spencer, Ph. D. is a meteorological expert with published studies that has not been refuted. He does not hold a doctors degree in theology. Don't start attacking his character.
Pointing out a huge misunderstanding of science in one making scientific claims is not an attack on character, it is pointing out a massive intellectual flaw.
What if Dr. Spencer believed the Earth was flat? How would you feel about his scientific credibility then? Do you think someone who believes the earth is flat is to be trusted on any other scientific matter?
Well, believing that evolutionary theory is wrong in the twenty first century is equally silly. Clear evidence that your "expert" has a bad case of the "Dunning-Kruger effect".
Meteorology is not climate science - he is well outside his field of competence and that you can cite him as an authority is evidence that you are too, I'm afraid. As I think is the fact that you apparently didn't take even a few minutes to find out something so blatant about the "authority" you cited.

Shouldn't get your science from TV Gary.
The real problem is that the insides of jet engines are extremely hot, and that causes the dust taken in to melt and gassify. Then some of it condenses onto the cooler parts of the engine and coats them with what amounts to glass. Cooler parts like for example the fanjet fans, which are supposed to be you know, moving.
Eventually things clog up enough the engine stops, and your jetliner becomes a glider. Rather a bad thing to be if you are in, say, the mid Atlantic.
Losing a bit of paint is the least of the problems.

Tell me, Ed Seedhouse, what's that got to do with the old propellor engines we were discussing? In case you lost the thread of the discussion in your rush to get to me, he suggested switching from jet planes to the old prop planes.
How come you always jump in when you think your boy is getting gored?

The bully boy is on the roam again I see. I was responding to words Gary actually wrote of course, but for some odd reason he gets freaked out by it. Some might wonder why he finds just the possibility of being mistaken so frightening? Well, it is well known that bullies have fragile personalities of course.
Or maybe I am being ungenerous and Gary's just forgotten the words he himself wrote?

Ed Seedhouse trying to impose his will again, in a discussion he doesn't appear to understand.
Ed Seedhouse hollering bully and any other things which enters his mind, I suppose. Not playing nice in the sandbox.
I just logged in and read two threads. One was an exchange between Coriina Wan, and Larry Brevand (excuse the spelling if i got it wrong) about kids chess, and all the good stuff that is going on.
The other was this crap! Please guys, grow up and get a life......

Really Gary, it's sad to see you reduced to mere gibbering like this. One would hope for a bit of originality, but alas it's not to be.
Let us remember who was reduced to calling the other one "stupid". My mom told me many years ago that the one who calls the other stupid in any argument is, by that fact alone, the loser.

Well I don't know how because I am too stupid. Just ask Gary! He has declared himself much smarter than I, so I think it's up to him, not a stupid fool like I.

Ed Seedhouse is now quoting his mom. We can only guess why she was moved to tell you that.

I take it you're looking for some of the action. If you had a life you wouldn't be reading this nonsense. It's certainly not chess so I imagine it entertains the echo. The moderator must love it or he would close the thread.
I just thought of a possible link between global warming and the recent activity in Iceland.
Eyjaffajollajhokul and Katla (a much larger, more exposive volcano on the scale of Pinatubo) are both sitting underneath a massive glacier. Like all glaciers in the north, this one has experienced massive ice loss over the last number of years. As the ice melts and the water drains away this reduces the weight of the ice over the volcanoes, releasing the pressure and could trigger an eruption. After the eruption of E-15 lots of ice melted and the water drained away, this releases pressure very fast and could even enhance the eruption. I am quite sure that we will be hearing more from Iceland within the next year. For a few details on Katla, have a look at the following link:
Hopefully you realize that "god" gave man the ability to think.
With this ability scientists have discovered evidence in the fossil records, etc. that substantiate the idea of evolution. Evidence from many other sources such as DNA sequencing, etc. support this theory also. Yes; it is a theory but it is a very solid theory (just like the theory of gravity and the atom).
Seeing it as an attack on "god" is totally wrong, surely you can see that. I think that most scientists believe in "god", but that does not give anyone a reason not to think for themselves...
Harper does not believe in science at all (substantiated by much evidence) while Obama believes greatly in science as well as "god". Science and ''god" are very compatible, don't you agree.
