General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Hi Ben, The hotel is very accessible by public transit or car. I hope you reconsider playing in the Keres. And bring a few friends as well.
This location is accessible by skytrain and free shuttle from the Vancouver airport. Take the Canada line to the airport and transfer to the free shuttle to the Delta Vancouver Airport. Free shuttles from Vancouver International Airport (5 minute trip) run every 20 minutes.
Richmond is a very central location. At least 1 million people live within 30 minutes by transit or car. Richmond is only 30 minutes from the US border and the hotel is just off hwy 99 (I-5 turns into 99 at the border).
Other than downtown Vancouver I can't think of a better location in the lower mainland for the majority of people.
Forgot to mention. There are many restaurants in Richmond within a short drive. You can also take the free shuttle to the airport for fast food or restaurant meals at YVR. http://www.vancouver-travel-tips.com...r-airport.html
There is even a Tim Hortons at YVR
Best Coffee at Vancouver Airport: Tie: Starbucks & Tim Hortons. The each have multiple locations. Starbucks is dependably strong, but Tim Hortons is a Canadian tradition (they also serves a large selection of donuts, bagels, and sandwiches).
Eye of the beholder. Not everyone will give the same answer: neighbourhood around 16th and Kingsway versus the no-neighbourhood of an airport hotel. BTW, AFAIR, this same (Delta) hotel was the site of the 1989 BC playdowns for the (XIOS GEMS) Chess Challenge.
My reading of tournament reports over the years indicates that people usually prefer hotels as tournament sites. At least in North America.
The 2002 Canadian Closed took place at a different airport hotel in Richmond. With all the car traffic, walking to civilization--Richmond style--was unpleasant. But once you arrived, there was a great selection of restaurants. You might wonder why Vancouver's Chinatown is a shadow of its former self--answer: much of it moved to Richmond.
The public transit connection as Brian describes it seems OK. For those out-of-towners who balk at the idea of eating at an airport (in some countries you can't even get into an airport), the situation at YVR is not as bad as at, say, LAX. The food is not as overpriced as it typically is at an airport, and if you go to the food area at International Departures, you can admire art (huge statue by Bill Reid) while you eat. Flying Wedge Pizza was OK, last time I tried it. "Personally", though, I like to walk, across the street to four blocks (1 km) away, for tournament restaurant meals. But it's not a deal breaker.
You were the guy who told me that the old Kingsway location was difficult to get to for locals..... I'm surprised that people would think the Shaw location last year was easier too.
There is a reasonably priced restaurant (part of the hotel) that is by the marina.
Well, HCC was difficult relative to CCC but the Delta is difficult relative to any of the sites of the past few years.
Anyway, I'll look into the shuttle route Brian suggested. This route should probably be listed above "By SkyTrain to Templeton Station and a ~ 1km walk", fwiw, as the latter is way more difficult than it sounds.
everytime it hurts, it hurts just like the first (and then you cry till there's no more tears)
that time control (G/90 + 60 sec. increment) has been used for the Keres for the last 2 or 3 years. It is a pretty slow control (typically 5 hour game).
I was just curious as I'm playing all 90mins/40;plus 30min+30secs in the First Saturday RRs in Budapest.
Sorry Paul I wasn't planning to play. It's a long and expensive trip for a weekend swiss and I'm planning to play in the Zalakaros open later his month.
