General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I'm sorry if that causes one inconvenience, surely most people don't care if people know what they think about Mr.Herbert(most of the people who have voted opinions are already predictable). If someone is angry because their vote is known I am sorry. It is a forum, I'm not sure why someone would be angry if people know their opinion.
It seems you are misquoting your own poll - the poll asks "Do you generally agree or disagree with Jean Heberts opinion?" Not what they think about Mr Hebert. It seems that Mr Craft and Mr Mallon are misreading the same way. The latter way would be judgemental of Jean Hebert and no doubt unacceptable here. Everyone should feel free to give an opinion of the posts here. Is that not so?
you are correct Mr.Dobrich, I should have said Hebert's opinion. But really your opinion on Mr.Hebert's opinion most likely reflects the way you think of him, in either a negative or positive fashion. Also judging someone's opinion is also judgmental of a certain aspect of Jean Hebert so if that is not acceptable delete this poll.

Not necessarily - it is quite possible to for example think that there should be minimimum standards for the Closed or that organizers should work hard for sponsorship without slagging those or disaggree or calling them incompetant or referring with disdain to Class C players who think their game is important.
There are issues for which reasonable people can disagree but arrogance and insults are unneccessary.
But for some reason most of the intelligent debates on this site eventually deteriorate into senseless name-calling. It seems impossible to keep an argument 'clean' when opinionated people clash.
When one logs in, one can get not only the poll results, but also the names of all people who voted yes, no, and 50/50. This is not mentioned in your post.
Good point. It is not at all clear that the poll is or is not anonymous. If that is a choice when creating the poll, it should be very clearly stated (I would have thought the board software would do so!)

If we would leave out everything that is "unnecessary" there wouldn't be much left on this message board. Maybe only Jean Hébert... :)

i think it's more a function of the internet than opinionated people
Are you kidding ? It has never been my intention. Keep voting, it mightl be very enlightening not only for me but also for some voters. A potentially win-win experiment.
But Jean, you're losing the poll. The organizers with thin skins, their sycophants, general malcontents and those who are jealous of your success over the decades are voting against you.

How much sleep will you lose over this? :)
I am actually losing sleep out of excitement. :) One can lose elections but not polls. And I am not into winning elections, polls or "popular" support. I am in the business of sharing honest opinions based on decades of experience in chess for its benefit. On that front the success is overwhelming if you look at the "Views" column at the right of your screen, the really meaningful poll...
That said I am actually surprised by this pretty healthy level of approval, especially considering from whom it comes from. When you share opinions with people like Hugh Brodie, Marc Ghannoum, Jonathan Berry, and Tom O'Donnell and others who know and understand not only canadian chess but also international chess inside out, why should one worry about seeing the Duncan Smiths and the Paul Bonhams on the other side ? These are actually more ammunitions if not actual votes to support the excellence of your positions. If I had drawn too much support (thus necessarily from unwanted sources) that really could have been disturbing.
Voters are the same everywhere, chess players or not. Most vote with their emotions and immediate interest rather than with a reasoned and thorough analysis of the issues, which is generally too demanding for them or simply beyond their capabilities. So in order to get their votes, one needs to make promises and tell them essentially what they want to hear. Fortunately I am not into that kind of business.
Nonetheless I note that with the cautious 50/50 group, I could probably form a majority government if need be. :)
The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.
