    Re: Candidate for CFC President

It is much more than posters...of course, as is typical the idea is 1%, the execution effort 99%.

Two examples of interesting promotions that didnt move forward:

In 1985 I was involved in the planning for a chess marketing initiative based on breaking the Guiness World Record for simultaneous chess games played - we were orchestrating with a large property management company to utilize their mall properties, garnering prizes, etc. However, the pitch didnt hit the first at bat, and we all got on with other things. Though it was an interesting idea to involve grass roots players in public settings.

In the 90s another interesting initiative involved Paramount and Jumbo Video where the idea was a "Searching for Bobby Fischer" talent search, with scholarship prizes, using simuls as the entry point and regional events, with a huge finale at large cities. Again, the effort/energy involved dissipated when some key team members got distracted.

Certainly coming up with a few realistic and focused ideas, forming a volunteer talent team to use their contacts/resources, and involving a key project manager who would gain a reasonable % from the initiatives (there has to be some compensation incentive for the quarterback, though with Board oversight) would be part of the plan.

The Federation definitely needs to re-think it's membership model. A chat with the CMA re. juniors and an attempt to reach out to casual adult players would grow the Federation.

It is becoming clear that the CFC may also vanish into cyberspace. Some companies, ie banks, do very well on-line. However for chess politics, and player support this may be a bad mistake.

Clearly, the last CFC president was not geared for this change at all.

By the way, is the CFC address in Stratford ON a mailing address or is it a true office? Just curious.

It is the address of the company where Gerry Litchfield works (and where Gerry does the Executive Director job on a part-time basis for the CFC)

But giving the magazine for free would remove any incentive to join the CFC lol

The Swiss chess federation provides back issues (counting 10 years http://www.swisschess.ch/presse/ssz.php )
Bulgarians (the country hosted Anand-Topalov match) do the same thing too http://www.chessbg.com/magazine.php?i=2010
and probably there are some other countries with the same practice.

Yeah, I think the magazine should just be free to whoever wants it. My last post was just an attempt at sarcasm.

I mentioned that it should be free in a post a while back and the reply was "then no one will have an incentive to pay membership fees to the CFC." My comment that I still don't receive this magazine despite paying my CFC dues seemed to fall on deaf ears.

Larry can feel free to correct me on this, but I think certain special interests and personal opinions within the CFC killed the best ever chance of this about four years ago.

Maybe they'd still deal, who knows, but certainly the strength of bargaining position of the CFC hasn't gone anywhere nice.

                      Hi Patrick:

To get the e-newsletter, Canadian Chess News, you just have to send your e-mail address to Gerry Litchfield at the CFC office, and he'll put you on the list.

                        Hi Egis:

Ontario has 18 governors ( both outgoing and incoming - there may now be one incoming vacancy ). The AGM is in Toronto. Wonder how many of the Ontario Gov's we'll get? Any guesses?

No vacancies? Your incoming Ontario Governors are:

                          Toronto
                          1. Michael Barron
                          2. Ilia Bluvshtein
                          3. Egidijus Zeromskis
                          4. Chris Field
                          5. Bob Armstrong
                          6. Nava Starr
                          7. Bill Evans
                          8. Nikolay Noritsyn

                          Northern Ontario
                          9. Ellen Nadeau

                          EOCA
                          10. Bill Doubleday
                          11. Gordon Ritchie
                          12. Aris Marghetis
                          13. Garland Best

                          SWOCL
                          14. Bob Gillanders
                          15. Garvin Nunes
                          16. Stuart Brammall
                          17. Michael von Keitz
                          18. Patrick McDonald

My guess is that a dozen Ontario governors will be present at the AGM.

                            GTCL Incoming CFC Governor Vacancy

                            Hi Bob:

One GTCL Governor nominated was ineligible because of lapsed CFC membership - Bill Evans. I spoke with him briefly last Thursday night and he gave no indication he would attempt to legitimize his nomination by now renewing his CFC membership. Michael Barron, GTCL President, at last I heard, was treating it as a GTCL vacancy, and looking for someone the GTCL Executive could nominate to fill the vacancy. I have written to one GTCL member to see if he might be interested. I don't know if the Executive yet has anyone in mind.

All Governors should consider becoming Life members.
