Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

Canadian Junior U20 Chess Championship 2011 - Open & Girls
Upon reflection and consultation, we should expect Agastya to at least play in our national junior championship in Mississauga to be eligible to play in the world championship in India. That would be in keeping with the spirit of the regulations we passed regarding playing in the CYCC to be eligible to play in the WYCC.
Of course, I should have thought of all this before saying anything at all. ;)
Sounds like an Ontario Junior U20 championship, or even a Toronto Junior U20 championship. As usual there is nothing there to favor a decent attendance from out of town players, even less from other provinces. Once again a bare bone event that is "national" only by name.
Hi Jean,
This event is basically a fund-raiser to help its winner play in India. In order to keep as much money for that main goal as possible we are providing what services we can with volunteer power.
One of the services our volunteers will be providing for out of province players is to shuttle players from the Toronto and Hamilton Airports to the event.
Since I know you want to help us provide services to out of province players I invite you to join us in Ontario Easter weekend. We could use another driver :)

In 1974 on my first trip overseas to the World cadet in France, the Israeli players was accompanied by two (!) bodyguards, one of them a "gorilla" with thick hair even on his back. Of course this was only two years after the Munich shooting. Nowadays Israelis apparently feel safer...
In Turkey there was at least on armed person with the Israeli team in the playing area. In Greece I did not see any, even when we went togheter in the same plane from Antalya.

I would like to inform our talented juniors that remaining 150 invitational letters were sent out and that brings us to 250 in total! Juniors who received the letter and would like to participate please let me know through my email ASAP. Organizers would like to build pre-register list, before the tournament starts. Thanks Mikhail. I think it is worth pointing out that the tournament is open to all juniors. An invitation letter is not a requirement. We blanketed the top 250 players by rating, but we were missing addresses for some players.

I will be at the Hart House tournament this weekend distributing flyers for 2011 Canadian Junior U20 Chess Championship! :D
I will also be bringing flyers for 2011 Hamilton Winter Open and 2011 Ontario Open Chess Championship. If anyone has any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
Just how entitled are people becoming these days?? If someone is good enough to play in the World Junior, then they should be good enough to win the Canadian Junior. All the talk and back-talk about the CYCC rules lately really annoyed me too. Why should *anyone* (with the possible exception of the previous year's champion) be allowed to bypass any level of the qualification program?
So yes, actually, someone (me) WOULD object to anyone being able to just buy their way out of the qualification procedures. Especially considering that they are not actually buying their way out, since none of their money is staying in Canada, and since that removes participation from the events, which is a big problem with the Junior especially!
Seriously. If you want to make the Provincial YCCs succeed, you need to make them mandatory with very few or no exceptions. Just as CMA has (quite successfully) done with the Chess Challenge. And there should be NO reason for anyone to be able to skip the national championships and still go on to World's, except maybe Jason Cao as a World Champion.
