    In Summary: a tricky draw

When I put this up, I thought white won with the h4-h5 idea but Emil has cooked it. So with best play: a draw. White is one tempo short (wins with K on g2).

    R. Patterson vs J. Doknjas (analysis) White to move.

    1 c5 Ke7
    2 h4 (otherwise g6 and h6 with a draw) g6 (otherwise h5 with a win)
3 h5 (otherwise black has h6 with a draw) gh!
    4 Kh2 dc
    5 bc Kf6
    6 Kh3 Ke5
    7 d6 Ke6
    8 Kh4 Kd7
    9 Kh5 Kc6

    10 Kg5 (Kh6 b6! is similar although black winds up with an extra pawn) h5 (b6? 11 Kf6 +-)
    11 Kh5 (Kf5 Kd7=) b6! (incredible)
    12 ab (cb Kd6 =) a5
    13 Kg5 a4
    14 Kf6 a3
    15 Ke7 (or b7 Kb7=) a2
    16 d7 a1=Q
    17 d8=Q Kc5 = (tablebase draw)

Well, I did say it would be tricky :-) and it's tricky enough to fool (ahem) even a strong player.

Probably a good position for bar bets. Let the mark take either side and say you will win as white, draw as black!

      Sorry...

Thank you for taking the pains to post the interesting position and for understanding my "confusing" prose.

The full game score: Would that be too much to ask for?

sure, although the game itself is not so interesting...

Very interesting endgame. I take it that 1.h4 just transposes via 1...g6 2.h5 gxh5, etc.?

Wow nice save! I thought the queen endgame was winning, but it is draw! Maybe 1.h4 could be better then.

Here is what seems to me a funny way to draw:

              1. h4 g6 2. h5 gxh5 3. Kg2 Ke7 4. Kf3 Kf6 5. c5 Ke7 6. Kf4
              dxc5 7. bxc5 h4 8. Kg4 Kf6 9. Kxh4 Ke5 10. d6 Ke6 11. Kg5 Kd7 12. Kh6 Kc6 13.
              Kg5 Kd7 14. Kh6 Kc6 15. Kg5 Kd7 (15... h6+ 16. Kf6 Kd7 17. Kg6 Kc6 18. Kf6 Kd7)

I think so. I did look at it briefly but as soon as black plays Kf6 white will be forced to play c5 which looks like a simple transposition.

it seems it is still a draw even with White keeping the c5 and b6 pawns (after both sides queening):
                  1.h4 g6 2.h5 gxh5 3.Kg2 [3.c5 Ke7 transposing] 3...Ke7 4.Kf3 Kf6 5.Kf4 [5.c5 Ke7 (5...dxc5 6.bxc5 Ke5 7.d6 Ke6 is enough too) 6.Kf4 h4 7.Kg4 dxc5 8.bxc5 h3 9.Kxh3 Kf6 10.Kg4 Ke5 11.d6 Ke6 12.Kg5 Kd7 13.Kh6 Kc6 14.Kxh7 b6 15.axb6 a5 16.b7 Kxb7 17.Kg6 a4 18.Kf7 a3 19.d7 a2 20.d8Q a1Q draw] 5...h4 6.c5 dxc5 7.bxc5 h5 8.Kf3 Ke5 9.d6 Ke6 10.Kg2 Kd7 11.Kh3 b6 12.axb6 Kc6 13.Kxh4 a5 14.Kg5 a4 15.Kf6 a3 16.Ke6 a2 17.d7 a1Q 18.d8Q
Remove the Black h5 pawn and it is a table base draw for 18 …Qa2+ (only move)
