General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Is this your apology for posting a dozen times claiming I was a ceramic engineer? Not sure why you are stalking me online, trying to find out everything posted in virtual space, finding someone who you think is me and scrutinizing gaps between their degree and professional designation and trying to poke holes in their history. Just ask me next time about my educational background.
Me stalking you? Is that your apology for you basically calling me stupid a whole bunch of times, with a rennisance man fantasy just because my opinion differs from yours. If in your opinion I am a rennisance man just because I've read some Socrates than you must travel in some very low intellectural circles. Not sure why you cyber stalked my posts on Chesstalk and put together a bizzare and long document on how I edit my posts. Ironically you just edited your last post. Have you forgotten that bizzare behaviour of yours? And the puzzled reaction from everyone else on Chesstalk? Not sure why you are threatening to put Vlad's post on some other website. You sling it around pretty good but then go all Mr Innocent when the tables are turned.
Given your willingness and even eagerness to make bizzare statements and put forth weird stuff to prove that I'm stupid, just because I don't listen to your every word without questions, to whit:
science can't prove anything
heat waves are not normally occuring events and are unusual in Greece
I have a rennisance man fantasy just because I've read Socrates
I don't believe in gravity
climate change theory is unquestionable as gravity itself
Therefore I seriously consider that you are the sort that would similarily distort actual evidence of climate change, you seem like you would stretch anything to prove your point.
So here's my apology. I'm sorry I had you confused with someone who really is an engineer. I should have known better than to think you might actually be an engineer.
And for the record Socrates never spit at anyone. He if anything would engage me in what is now known as the Socratic method. I for one am sure that after doing so he would agree with me that I know only one thing, which is that I know nothing.

I have never indicated that I have advanced mathematical education. I am an accounting and finance student. You are probably not familiar with the level of mathematics used in a commerce program. Let me be the first to tell you that it is not rocket science. FYI, accounting is more about professional judgement about fair presentation than it is about just adding up a bunch of numbers. That's why for the heavy mathematical lifting actuaries and financial mathematicians are resourced. If you want to know if a pension fund is correctly funded you call an actuary not an accountant. If you want to set up a revenue management system for say an airline you call a mathematician with probably at least a masters in math and more likely a doctorate. If you want to do price derivatives you resource someone with at least a master's in financial math. A BComm in finance or even an MBA in finance does not qualify anyone to do the heavy mathematical lifting required for any of those things.
Nor while we are at it have I ever claimed to have any particular expertise in finance that would require others to heed my every word. I have no professional designations - I am not an CA, CGA, CMA or CFA. Until such time as I acheive one of those professional designations and obtain real world experience I consider myself to be exactly what I am, a student.
I don't call myself an accountant (or engineer for that matter) when I am not. Similarly to having a bachelors in engineering, a bachelors in accounting does not make you a professional in the field.
If you want to know who on Chesstalk has expertise in accounting than look no further than Bob who is a CMA.
If I have an area where I can claim some expertise it would be in the area of Ontario Works since I have training and years of experience in the field. However, even then I would not be troubled if someone had a different opinion than mine on OW.

Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
You really amuse me Mr. Kitich. Such incredible stamina for providing an endless tirade of bafflegab. No one can possibly compete on this forum with your gobbledegook. Every person on the forum that has a reasoned divergence of views gets worn down and eventually gives up after being bamboozled by your neverending desire to "one-up" them and have the last word. Has anyone ever succeeded in having the last word with you. A quick perusal of ChessTalk seems to show that the answer is a resounding no. So go ahead and spew forth your best vitriol in response to this post. It is clearly entertaining to many readers of this blog.

Why don't you do a long winded paper on it and really get it out of your system? It really bothers you when people disagree with you. I've been naughty, punish me Paul. Where you find the time amidst reading thousands and thousands of peer reviewed articles amazes me. In addition to apparently thousands of pop-mag articles. Do you sleep ever? Or perhaps you exagerate your volume of reading material and merely post on Chesstalk. Here's an idea, maybe post on chess sometime. I don't remember a single post from you on the topic of chess. Remember chess? However, since you undoubtably prefer the approach of ad hominem attacks to actually discussing the science I have my doubts as to your actual investigation of the science of climate change. Don't try to tell me Rolling Stone is a scientific journal. If that's the extent of your reading material it's rather sad.
Maybe I will call the other Paul Beckwith, he's undoubtably the sane one. In any case I'm off to see Rome, Munich, Berlin etc etc so I think I"ll sign off on our little and I do mean little discussion, if you can call it that...

Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Bob, it is an amazing article. Finally information that has been mostly confined to the scientific community is getting out in high readership magazines...
For about 6 months I have been talking about connections between declining sea ice and extreme weather events as people following this thread know (my CMOS talk in Jan.) Here is an article by the UK meteorological office that illustrates these connections... http://metofficenews.wordpress.com/2...limate-change/
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Mr. Kitich,
It used to bother me when people such as yourself that know absolutely squat about climate change (a subject in which I am an expert and forever striving to increase that expertise) make claims that are completely without scientific merit, in fact that are downright wrong, quite often intentionally wrong. Why? In most subjects this would not matter. Not so with climate change. Because our climate is collapsing around us and there are still many many people that fail to see this. So humanity will not act, and it will get worse and worse until there will not be a single person on the planet that does not experience gutwrenching changes. People are dying now, and will be dying in ever greater numbers from the near-term changes that are underway. Massive crop failure in the U.S. this year will not starve people in North America but will stress the economy and pockets of many individuals. It will starve people already in poverty who pay 25% or 50% of their incomes on food now. North Americans will not panic over one year of crop failure. However if it happens the following year, and the one after that then the system will snap.
Climate denialism and such nonsense no longer bothers me because I have learned how to deal with such people. As is absolutely required for anyone in the field of climatology. How? I initially take the time to explain some science but when it is clear that I am dealing with an immovable object like yourself or Vlad I just have some fun with it and hurl a few insults, etc. However this gets old and distracting and unproductive very quickly and wastes a lot of time. As it has now, in your case.
It no longer bothers me because our planet is now committed to this gutwrenching change. The sea ice will be gone very soon and the roller coaster ride will be unstoppable. If I was Obama I would declare war on warming, cool the Arctic with geoengineering to keep the sea ice intact and the methane in the ground and undergo a crash program to slash emissions. But I am not. So I do what I can to educate people/inform them/get the word out. I join organizations like AMEG. I meet with politicians at all levels of government and talk about climate change. I have a clear conscience because I have tried. I know that many people around the world will die, I know that unbelievable changes are starting to occur and will explode in frequency, amplitude, spatial extent, impact extent, etc. over this decade, and I know that the general public will be in shock when their familiar climate system becomes a complete stranger to them...I passed through the shock stage, and the subsequent unaccepting stage of grief a long time ago, I am in the acceptance stage.
Apologies, it was a blast to hurl invective back and forth, but I am not playing that game anymore. I will not be reading ANY of your posts on this thread, for a while anyway. I need a Kitich break.
P.S. I did not take the time to write this post just for your sake alone. I am posting it, with your name removed, in social media under the heading "Extracting oneself from unproductive exchanges with climate deniers". Thanks for the learning experience.
I don't resort to calling people stupid just because they disagree with me. Nor do I call them 'communist thugs' which is something you accused me of once and still have not clarified or apologized for. You and Paul need to understand that you are responsible for the insults and false accusations you use.

Poor Paul, I hope one day you'll learn how to deal with the real world. Be sure to also post your comments on whatever website you are going to run to for reinforcement from your climate change fanatics. That way they can see my comments in context and see how insulting you can get. Be also sure to post how you called NASA astronauts and scientists brainwashed old-timers.
I guess someone disagreeing with you is just something you can't handle. An expert? Experts generally tend to have posted peer reviewed articles. You have not done so. No surprise there it seems. No fear you can always write another long, bizzare, pointless diatribe paper on my editing style. I have a lot more respect for science and the scientific method than you do.
I still suggest when you do come back that you start posting about chess once in a while because you know this is a chess site right? I mean you seem to have lots of other websites you keep threatening to repost our comments to so I assume you could post about climate change there initially as well.
Perhaps you should try actual science with Vlad and I instead of insults and put downs. Might work.

I do not resort to calling people stupid. Expressing a different opinion is just that, expressing a different opinion. It is called a debate. If you choose to interpret it as an insult, that is your problem.
To quote a previous post from Paul, " I'm only responsible for what I say, not for what you understand".
I never called you a communist thug. Period. Please show me the post.

I am talking about when you accused me of calling you a communist thug. That was insulting because I never did it. You tried to make me seem like some extremist going around calling people communist thugs. It didn't work because there is not a single post on Chesstalk where I called you a communist thug and you know it.
Your last sentence just shows you didn't comprehend what I wrote. I have never suggested that you have called me a communist thug. That would be outrageous. I don't think anyone would accuse me of being a communist.
and I do have to stand corrected, it was Marxist not communist thug you accused me of calling you, apparently when I go around hurling accusations at people I get very specific as to their particular brand of communism

I've been thinking of fooling around with making pottery. I don't know anything about it but think I could get the feel for it. Problem is my oven will only give me around 500 F degrees. :)
Greenland surface ice melting was occurring on 40% of the surface. Then 4 days later it was on 97% of the surface. This has never been seen before. This is not rocket science, when it is too warm ice melts.
