General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Go to the Facebook site "Can this onion ring get more votes than Stephan Harper?"; it has more followers than Harper. It is pointless to argue with the vitriol spewing from the right wing zealots on this chat group...
The F35 is a crappy plane for Canada. NO ENGINE; short range (2220 km versus F18 range of 3300 km, should have 2 engines for reliability while flying in harsh Arctic conditions; unless engine is correct type it will lose stealth capability; Canada just spent last decade upgrading most of our F18s; they are still great aircraft and very reliable; tried and tested...
It is pointless to argue with the vitriole spewing from the left wing zealots on this chat group when they think that a plane can fly without an engine. The F18 will fly as long as they can but they are nearing the end of their useful life.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Vlad is hallucinating once again, thinking that a plane can fly without an engine, also thinking that Canada does not need a military, also saying that gas prices will hit $10 per liter. He makes stuff up every second sentence. I could take every 2 sentences of any post that he has ever made and rip it to shreds; but what is the point. This is too much fun...
By the way Bjorn Lomberg is a well known climate denier who claimed about 6 months ago that he had changed his mind...
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Stephen Harper and a CSIS agent are taking a stroll when they come upon a little girl carrying a basket with a blanket over it in a park.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper asks the girl, “What's in the basket?”
She replies, “New baby kittens.” Sh...e opens the basket to show him.
”How nice,” says Harper. “What kind are they?” The little girl says, “Conservatives.”
Harper smiles, pats the little girl on the head, and continues on.
Three weeks later, Harper is taking another stroll, this time with Jack Layton. They see the little girl again with the same basket. Harper says, “Watch this, Layton, it’s really cute.”
They approach the little girl, and Harper asks her how her kittens are doing. “Fine,” she says. Then, smirking, he nudges Layton with his elbow and asks the little girl, “And can you tell us what kind of kittens they are.”
“Liberals,” she says.
Appalled, Harper exclaims, “But three weeks ago, you said they were Conservatives!”
“I know,” she says. “But now their eyes are open.”

Jannypan,
I agree with you that the nuclear industry needs to get their act together if they want to remain relevant. The main thing that would help would be for the industry to work together to standardize the design of the next generation reactors around the world (with modular capability for size variation); thus when a reactor accident occurred it would be possible for the whole industry to come together to resolve the incident. A big problem now is that each country has their own design on reactors, so each problem is unique, and harder to solve.

Kudos to whoever composed this joke. I loved it.
I'm really learning a lot from this election talk, I've been away from Canada for so long....
Paul, did you see that today the S&P rating agency lowered the U.S. credit rating a notch? Where do you think Canada is headed if the U.S. is headed towards a default?
Just so you know, from all I've seen and read, I'm anti-Harper. I just hate elitists. Mulroney was the most vile politician ever in my books.
Only the rushing is heard...
Onward flies the bird.

You keep mentioning the no engine. Kind of disengenuous.
I can go into an auto dealership and buy a car. If I don't want the stock models they have, I can order one and specify the engine and transmission I want if it's supplied by the manufacturer. The final price varies depending on the engine, transmission and other items I want installed in the auto. Same thing with the planes and that probably extends to the radar capabilities and so forth.
If this is the line the opposition is using to win an election they are undermining their own cause.
Also, in my opinion, the F-35 is not a "crappy plane". I don't like the purchase because the planes are expensive in our recovering economy and we are involved in conflicts which have nothing to do with our defence.
The elephant is back in the room after some soft stepping around the issue in the debates.
My prediction is that if there is a Conservative minority Iggy will not miss a beat to resurrect the idea of a coalition which has been widely pooh poohed by the liberal media. Iggy has put the post election leader review on hold because he plans on being prime minister even if he loses. Paul Beckwith will say that this is just and fair. The question is whether this little bit of information will give the Conservatives the little boost they need to avoid this eventuality.

It's the way the system works. Whoever wants to form the government will need the confidence of parliament. It happened here in Ontario when the NDP supported the Liberals to get rid of the conservatives. Millers conservatives had more seats than the liberals but the deal allowed the Liberals to form the government.
One thing to remember is not all ridings have the same number of voters. Some have a relatively small population but a large area of land.
I doubt a political party asking people to vote for them or all sorts of nasty stuff will happen to them is a majority winning strategy.
Gary, regarding the planes with no engines; common sense dictates that when you buy a plane it is capable of doing what planes do, namely fly, without extra cost.
Paul Bonham, I did hear about the downgrade to the U. S. credit rating. Not surprising since the military budget has spiralled completely out of control there. Of course Canada will get crushed if they implode, along with the rest of the world...
Economically we are in an interesting cycle. Oil goes over $100, and the transportation costs of goods and materials are too high for the world economies to handle, so growth stalls and then drops; this drops oil demand so prices slide back to $60 - $80 per barrel. Economies start to grow again driving up oil demand and prices go over $100 and the same stalling/drop occurs although now the oil does not fall quite as far in price. This will continue to happen ad nausium until renewables are large scale enough to truly drop the oil demand. Think renewables are not up to the task, think again (Google "Sustainable energy without the hot air" and read this thing)...
here is some very good logic on the vital need to get regime change in Canada...
Regime change? If you have a reality cheque, now's the time to cash it.
Harper never had a majority. He had minorities and had the Liberals, NDP and/or Bloc supporting him and helping to pass legislation. Now they try to convince us their sh*t doesn't smell.
Regime change seems appropriate an expression to vote out a ruler who removes perfectly competent people (would you like a list of them) from important positions due to something they said, or he just did not like them.
