General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Hysterical environmentalism -from climate catastrophism down -is proving a tougher and tougher sell.
Probably it not the oil they don't like. It paying for the oil.
When there was the pipeline problem (break) in the U.S. last summer I was reading the refineries were running short. That was just from one branch run.
The West Texas crude price is about 10 dollars a barrel less than the Brent crude. That means we're getting that much less for oil we sell the Americans. They're getting a major bargain. We need a pipeline to the ocean to fill tankers.

That won't happen if Ignatieff wins. One of the planks of the Liberal platform is no tankers off the west coast anyways. I guess tankers are okay on the east coast as long as Newfoundland returns all Liberals again.

Newfoundland didn't return all Liberals last time. St. John's East has an NDP incumbent. It had been a Conservative stronghold. St. John's South - Mount Pearl could go Con and Avalon should be close. The Harper promise of funding guarantees for the Lower Churchill project should win some votes. I figure the Liberals have an excellent chance of losing a couple of seats there and the conservatives should improve their standings. Maybe the Easterners here have a better take on this than I do and could give a better view.
It's starting to look like the only question is if Ignatieff will step down as leader in his concession speech or shortly thereafter.
I might be voting liberal. I like the candidate on a personal basis from the few times I've talked to him and it's not like the liberals have any chance of winning the election.

My current feeling is that the Conservatives will improve their numbers but probably not enough to form a majority. You wouldn't get that from the news coverage (especially CBC/Toronto Star) which seem to imply that Harper is on the ropes. Everything could change with a good or bad performance in the debate which apparently will not feature Elizabeth May despite her court challenge. Had she been a bit smarter and had a bit more foresight she might have tried challenging the regulations for debates before the election was called.
The Liberal platform is really bad from my point of view and will cause serious economic problems for Canada if implemented.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
May never expected to win the court challenge. It was a political stunt to get national coverage (a news story) the Greens otherwise wouldn't get. That's why they didn't issue the challenge last year when there was time to fully prosecute their case.

Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
More global warming controversy. All this during the election campaign.
I don't care how much the politicans want to spend on the climate. Seniors enjoy the climate. They don't throw money at it. At least most of us enjoy it.
I had to laugh last week. One of the political party leaders is complaining about another one lifting his policies. I guess he missed the part where he hadn't presented a platform as yet. Had he done so it wouldn't have been an issue. I guess the early bird gets the worm, such as it is.
I had a look at the Green Party platform. What's missising is pretty important.
It neglects to deal with the wars in which we are involved. Doesn't mention defence or the fighter planes. How can a political party claim to be for the climate and environment and not state they will put an end to the assault on the planet from our nation by bombs and so forth?
It looks like more of the same and don't rock the boat. Simply trying to cut out a niche within the existing framework. That's this voters opinion.

Let's not flip the topic. If you support the Green agenda I've told you the problems I have with it. What's the point in growing a few more flowers and trees when there is no statement to end Canadian participation in wars and bombing?
Failing some real differences the Green platform looks to me as simply a different way of redistributing the wealth of the nation.
Regarding the oil sands and Alberta oil industry, would YOU mind telling us if it's federal or provincial jurisdiction? Don't forget the "notwithstanding" clause.
East Anglia went after one of its critics using the defense that Jones had been exonerated by various kangaroo court inquiries. Things did not go well for East Anglia in front of the UK Press Complaints Commission.
“The Commission was satisfied that readers would be aware that the comments therein represented the columnist’s own robust views of the matters in question. … The Commission has previously ruled [North v The Guardian] that ‘In the realm of blogging (especially in cases touching upon controversial topics such as climate change), there is likely to be strong and fervent disagreement, with writers making use of emotive terms and strident rhetoric. This is a necessary consequence of free speech. The Commission felt that it should be slow to intervene in this, unless there is evidence of factual inaccuracy or misleading statement.’
