General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Barring an NDP or Conservative collapse between now and election day, it seems to me that the Conservatives have a decent shot at a narrow majority depending on which poll is correct. Ipsos Reid put them at 43% on Thursday. Didn't the NDP in Ontario have a majority with 37% or 38% of the popular vote when Rae gained power?
The NDP spike is bad for the Liberals and bad for the Bloc. It is not bad for the Conservatives. People don't go from the Conservatives to the NDP unless their whole political philosophy has become totally unravelled. Ideally the left wing vote is split 3 ways in Quebec and 2 ways exactly down the middle in the rest of Canada.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
It is possible that due to the NDP surge in Quebec that the Conservatives might even be able to hang on to its Quebec seats which greatly improves the prospects of a majority government.
I don't think that there is anything you can do other than rest. I don't recall there being any other treatment for it.
I was given an antiviral drug as it was caught early. Doesn't cure but I guess cuts down the pain Paul mentioned and shortens the outbreak. I think it's more prevalent in cancer patients and the oncologist diagnosed mine. If it happens again I'll know what it is.

I had shingles about twenty years ago or more. I guess they keep coming out with new drugs though maybe its just a matter of my memory being faulty because I don't remember taking any meds when I had my case. If memory serves correctly shingles happens when the dormant chicken pox virus reasserts itself usually due to stress.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Iggy has had a bad week. I don't even want to repeat the headline from the Toronto Sun website. Cue soundtrack from Apocalypse Now. Jim Morrison with the speakers set high. "This is the end..."
The conservatives seem to be hovering near that magical 40% mark. What happens if they really manage to shatter it as seems more likely as the days go by.
So who is the next rainmaker for the liberals if they are even relevant anymore. Is it Justin Trudeau, Bob Rae or someone else? There was quite a zinger against Trudeau who seems to be more like Margaret than Pierre in the National Post. Maybe Bob Rae can negotiate a merger with Jack Layton.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
I bought gas for my car today. $135.3. People must be wondering what's happening. The Conservatives brought us the HST which is tacked onto the price of gas. The higher the gas price the more tax they get. They had no problem instituting this with the help of the Ontario Liberals.
I suppose the outcome will depend on if people can afford the current situation and how the vote split will fall. If the Libs and NDP split votes the Cons could pick up some ridings.
With what's happening around the world with general discontent, I wouldn't bet this election. Particularly if there is a very heavy turnout of voters.

I am pretty sure that the GST portion of the gas tax always applied and I am pretty sure that most sophisticated voters know that. The extra 8% can be laid at the feet of the provincial liberals. It wasn't like they had no choice. They did manage to find a way to not apply the PST portion to some items like books (not that I am complaining about that). Their day of reckoning is coming soon. There finally seems to be some blowback from the cap and trade platform of both the Liberals and NDP with the liberals bashing the NDP over their 3.6 billion dollar tax grab. My sides are hurting from laughing so hard.

Yes there was GST and other taxes before the HST. Of course, the HST is both the Provincial Liberals and Federal Conservatives.
I've never been a card carrying member of any political party and voted for whoever I wanted at the time. Dief, Joe Clark, Mulroney, Chretien, maybe David Lewis but I don't recall for sure, Stanfield. Never for Trudeau. Provincially, it was often NDP and guys like Stephen Lewis and also Bob Rae. Rae had a rocky first year but had the government in bad times.
I'd say Ignatieff's wanting to fund KAIROS will cost him a lot of votes.

Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
I'm not sure that support for or lack of support for Kairos resonates with anyone enough to affect too many votes. They seem to be a bunch of lefties but probably well intentioned lefties. There was a kerfluffle with the Israelis but they probably have the right be be a bit annoyed as the Israelis blew up their clinic in a bit of unintended collateral damage presumably.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Things seem to be going insane at the moment. I can't wait for this election to be over so we can see if the pollsters are right and we are extremely dumb as an electorate. I can't see Ontario joining this orange revolution. The memories of the Bob Rae government are too fresh in our collective minds. The Chinese curse, "May you live in interesting times..." could be upon us.

when i first read this i thought you were talking about the NDP :)
Sorry but I don't agree with the Ontario popular evaluation of the Ontario Rae government. Rae took over during what was then the worst recession since the depression, I believe. Also, his " Rae days " idea was an equitable way to spread the pain, and keep people in jobs, despite all the crying the unions did. The unions have more of a hate on Rae I think, than the general public.
I was sorry to see him go back to his family's Liberal roots - like him as a politician - should have been Liberal leader, but many of the Libs couldn't stomach his NDP baggage - would have done better than Ignatieff ( so for me it's is a good thing the Libs rejected him ) - just now in the wrong party.
Bob
( P.S. - making you nervous to think of Jack heading a coalition government as PM??!! )
