General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
A study released this week concludes that government “green-job” programs aren’t the yellow-brick road to happiness in Europe. “Green programs in Spain destroyed 2.2 jobs for every job created,” write Kenneth P. Green and Ben Eisen in their paper for the Winnipeg-based think-tank, Frontier Centre, “while the capital needed for one green job in Italy could create five new jobs in the general economy.”
Re: Green jobs $791,597 a pop,... inefficient economy killers
To try to balance things, here's a news release I saw today. There's lots of reasons some nations gain jobs and other lose them. Certainly Spain and Italy are having their problems.
Re: Green jobs $791,597 a pop,... inefficient economy killers
Regarding Frontier Centre:
Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada:
"Over the last decade, the Frontier Centre has grown into a sturdy Manitoba Maple, with solid branches reaching into every major area of public policy research and advocacy and did it with without taking a nickel in government money. Everyone associated with the organization should be proud of what you have accomplished. Frontier's ongoing contribution to serious, informed public policy debate in Canada has been outstanding."
OK, so no government funding. So where is their funding from? Looks like they are connected with "Friends of Science"; one of the most prominent climate denial groups out West. These people are very smart and pervasive and have lots of money from oil companies; look at the totally misleading names they choose.
Source of funding: 74% from foundations (report below, 2009), but no more information given. Their annual report looks like an advertisement...funding 78% from foundations in 2010...again, no information on which ones...
Some quotes from above link:
"Ball is a Canadian climate change skeptic and was previously a "scientific advisor" to the oil industry-backed organization, Friends of Science"
"In 2006 Ball has also questioned the science behind CFC's and the Ozone layer. Ball claimed that "CFC's were never a problem.... it's only because the sun is changing".[12]"
"On January 10, 2011, Canada Free Press began publishing on this website an article by Dr. Tim Ball entitled “Corruption of Climate Change Has Created 30 Lost Years” which contained untrue and disparaging statements about Dr. Andrew Weaver, who is a professor in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria, British Columbia. Ten days later, Canada Free Press issued a full apology to Dr. Weaver and retracted Ball's article."
In summary, this organization looks to have no peer-reviewed science backing up their work; and I would bet that they are funded by oil companies. Any takers on this bet?
It looks like the foundations funding are a big secret; no information is given; more information on Tim Ball and his activities here... http://www.desmogblog.com/tim-ball
Sierra Club court case thrown out for lack of merit
The Sierra Club's court case against the new border crossing has been thrown out. Full steam ahead!
Brian Masse NDP MP who voted against funding the new bridge and then amusingly ran while taking credit for the government's decision to fund the new bridge was very critical of the Sierra Club in the Windsor Star today for being indifferent to the plight of Windsor's children choking on the fumes of the trucks lined up for the Ambassador Bridge. I guess the Sierra Club funding from the Ambassador Bridge is more important than the health of a few thousand school children in a hinterland like Windsor.
More hypocrisy by environmentalists. Colour me unsurprised.

Re: Sierra Club court case thrown out for lack of merit
From the Vatican...
"We are committed to ensuring that all inhabitants of this planet receive their daily bread, fresh air to breathe and clean water to drink as we are aware that, if we want justice and peace, we must protect the habitat that sustains us,"
As I said before Vlad, you are a part of the environment...
"We appeal to all nations to develop and implement, without delay, effective and fair policies to reduce the causes and impacts of climate change on communi¬ties and ecosystems, including mountain glaciers and their watersheds, aware that we all live in the same home. By acting now, in the spirit of common but differentiated responsibility, we accept our duty to one another and to the stewardship of a planet blessed with the gift of life."

Paul, have you noticed that people who believe in the fairy tale of Virgin Birth and Santa Claus also believe in weapons of mass destruction and global warming as well as other propaganda they read in "science daily" ?
A computer beat me in chess, but it was no match when it came to kickboxing
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Vlad, you said recently that God must love Canada.
Now you are ridiculing the Vatican? Science fiction scenarios? Can you reconcile your view on God loving Canada with the Vatican view on the environment. You are not being consistent, please explain.
Re: Sierra Club court case thrown out for lack of merit
Ernest, Vlad made references to God a few days ago, so I thought some Vatican news would open up his logical brain pathways, but the blinder neurons fire and swamp out any rational thought. It is a Pavlovian response; he hears climate change and his brain goes into an infinite loop of irrationality, invective, and fear...

Global food production on decline due to climate change...
"only rice and soybean crops have remained relatively unaffected by climate change. But global corn production was nearly 4 percent lower than it might have been if that warming trend hadn't existed, and the world's wheat crop was 5.5 percent lower than normal. The decreased output may well be responsible for a 6 percent rise in global prices for those two food crops over the three decades"

One of the main reasons the price of corn rose is because of the use in Ethanol. The foolish notion that if food is burned in vehicles it will help the planet.
Another reason for dropping production is the cost of fertiizer. The price was driven very high and farmers around the world were trying to drop the frequence they fertilized and got lower yields. It depends on if you're more profitable paying for the fertilizer or without the fertilizer and with a lower yield.
There's also crop rotation to take into consideration.
Re: Sierra Club court case thrown out for lack of merit
I copied/pasted my comment and yours (this is a public forum) and emailed them to the fellow who wrote the article to get his response to your comments...quite sure that the factors you mentioned were considered in the analysis by the Stanford people.
Who should we believe, Stanford researchers or an old fart with a chip on his shoulder?
PS...I only put in this last line in response to your last line. Remove your comment and I will remove mine. If you cannot take it then don't dish it out...if you want a truce and stick to ideas then I am all for it...

Flattery won't get you anywhere with me, you single minded wannabe intellect.
If you want to discuss the pricing of food and agriculture commodities as well as crop yields you have to acknowledge the other factors which go into that and mention them as well.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
So... Paul... I mention God and therefore I must lend credence to whatever the Vatican says about glaciers. That is a different way of looking at things.
