General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Do not underestimate FIDE's capability to derail the best laid out plans. These days they like things to happen in Russia or nearby.
Hi Jean,
I always thought Russia was the fall back card if things didn't go as planned.
In Canada, Ottawa use to be the fall back card...and Toronto has played this role also...these days it seems to be Hal Bond.
For the CMA, we want the Canadian Chess Challenge to travel across the country and we encourage this.
However, if the host city or province can not come up with the necessary funds...we take the event to a city where we have a solid anchor...Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa.
FIDE will certainly not derail anything about the Canadian bid. Russia is not getting any preferential treatment regarding bids. Lately their successful bids have either been the best or the only. I think Larry has it pretty much worked out!
The deadline for submitting bids to FIDE is May 31, 2012. If there is more than one bid, some campaigning is likely to preceed the vote at the Instanbul Olympiad by the General Assembly.
If the Toronto project has secured enough funding by May 31 it will be an official bidder. Toronto is the sentimental favourite at the moment - the Olympiad has never been in North America.
Norway's 2014 Olympiad budget exceeds $20 million. Toronto's will likely be in the same range.
At this moment we are starting even. You want to hedge your position so you have the knowledge they have the deposit and a clearer view of the possibility of other bids.
There may not be other bids so I'd likely lose a bet made now in that case.
I can understand you might not want to bet on the bid at this point, and I wouldn't either, but that is the wager I offered. It's not like 20 dollars ia a lot of money. :)
Yes, I completely agree with you!
I will put my $20.00 as well, based on what we do not know.
When people don't expect something to go wrong, something will definitely will go wrong!
People should not count chickens before they hatch, otherwise they might be disappointed. :D

Hal: How much of a deposit has to be ready for May 31 ? I assume a bid with deposit would only be made, if the bid team thinks the funding will be in place in time for the event itself.

I offered a small $20. wager to two people here whom I considered plugged into the chess scene. Couldn't get either one to even cover that token sum on the event happening in Canada in 2016.
If you run into problems coming up with the 20 million, maybe try to hit Greece up for a loan.
I always thought Russia was the fall back card if things didn't go as planned.
Is that really what you think ? This coming from Hal would not be surprising since he is hooked with FIDE up to his ears and cannot see what is right or what is wrong anymore, but coming from you it leaves me wondering.
Hosting the Olympiad in Canada, although it may seem like a long shot, would only do good things for chess here. Who knows, maybe some top players would decide they like Canada and decide to stay! And for sure it would stimulate new interest and create some new lifetime devotees to chess.
As for making $20 bets against it happening - that seems kind of ghoulish, like betting when someone will die. Halloween is over, let's think positive!
For their courage, the organizing team deserves all our support. Good luck to them, let's hope it happens!

I think your analogy is a bit strong. It's more to do with the member nations involved and the chance of them voting for Canada to receive the event in a competive environment where European, Asian and African nations are involved in bidding. At this point we don't know who will bid and I've been specific the wager is time limited.
Ghoulish was that Olympic bid where the Toronto mayor was joking about being boiled in a pot of hot water.
If you know more about the current state of play between FIDE prospective bidders please enlighten us!!
By us I assume you mean you and CFC. I am pretty sure, that he would be more than willing to enlighten you guys. If only those, who wanted to be enlightened and serious enough, would listen without sarcasm and make jokes about it after!!!

I think Hal meant "all the readers of Chesstalk" since he posted the reply here. It is *far* too easy to get into a "flame war" on online forums - partly because no one is within arms reach to retaliate physically, but also because posts on an online forum can easily be misinterpreted - whether they are carefully constructed or not.
For example, I interpreted your response above as simply a subtle continuation of your war of words with Bob Gillanders and the CFC in general... most likely that isn't what you intended, was it?
Once a thread starts going downhill, it becomes completely pointless and any original value is pretty much gone.

I think I did not I mentioned Gillanders name. In case missed it, please point it out to me!
How people interpret or misinterpret statement, that I have no control over. :D
So Kerry, did I misinterpret Jean? After his comments about me, FIDE and right vs wrong I thought he a least owed the readers some evidence in support of his arguments about Russia's preferred status as a host of FIDE events.
