Scarborough CC Top Section ( there are 3 sections ) - 19 players; 5 players 2000 and over.

It will be interesting to see how our stats compare as the 2012-3 season proceeds.

I guess you'll be pleading nolo contendere in 9 months time when the SCC shut down for the summer, Bob (:

On a more serious side, does the SCC have many 1900+ rated juniors who'll likely attain 2000+ status in the near future? That will likely dictate who gets ultimate bragging rights to the greater number of 2000+ rated active club members.

Canada's Strongest Club 9 Months from Now?

      Hi Jack:

SCC currently has 3 juniors in the top section at 1920 and over. I would say all of them have potential to go over 2000 before the end of June, 2013 ( when we shut down for the summer :) ).

As far as I can tell, Annex CC has only 1 ( whom you are familiar with!! ).

While 'only' rated 1881 at the moment, my money says that Hayk Oganesyan hits 2000 in that time frame, Bob. Hayk (which means Armenia in Armenian) was playing in the U1600 in the 2011 Toronto Thanksgiving (only his 2nd CFC tournament) and has picked up more than 400 points since that event. Given he's sitting on his current apex rating, the new CFC bonus system that you've been highlighting will likely help immensely in that endeavour. Never bet against an Armenian, especially someone named Armenia.

Every time M. and S. compare their size and strength, but always avoids meeting on those magic 100 boards. Come on guys, show your moves.

Exactly! (We're just as proud of the seven adult beginners in our beginner course, who start by learning how the pieces move, as we are of the masters and experts in the top section of our tournament.) And we've got a few, but it would be great if there were more chess-playing families!

Re: Mississauga Chess Club is #1

Let me take this opportunity to combine two ChessTalk threads into one. A number of ChessTalkers have posted the opinion that spending five figures on a printed chess magazine is wasteful of CFC funds. To quote Gary Ruben >>>>
"Raising the membership dues to improve chess and then p*ssing the money into a print magazine......"

Now here's a golden opportunity to promote chess in a big way. Suppose that we get an agreement from the two clubs to stage a bragging rights match in the courtyard of Toronto City Hall - about half way between the Scarborough Chess Club and the Mississauga Chess Club - to be played on 100 boards. Score cards (showing 1 - 0, 0 -1, or 1/2 - 1/2) to be displayed on the individual tables as well as an over-all scoreboard showing

                Scarborough CC xx
                Mississauga CC xx

Next to the scoreboard, a representative of each club to hand out promotional material on their club. Not only would the two clubs benefit from the publicity but chess in general may attract the eyes of potential sponsors. Of course 100 chess games in a row would attract TV coverage.

I nominate Bob Armstrong to organize and coordinate the event as he is (I believe) the publicity person for the CFC.:)

Cool idea, but the wrong venue. The cost would be prohibitive to transport 60-90 kids into the heart of Toronto with it's outrageous parking costs and traffic issues.

Both clubs meet on thursday evenings. I suspect Scarborough clubhouse maybe too small, but Mississauga clubhouse could hold 200 players. If Scarborough wants to make the trip, I will see about inviting the media. :)

Of course, Scarborough may wish to invest in ear plugs first. :)

As host club, we do reserve the right to set the tournament rules. None of this FIDE crap.

Interesting, you insist on your location and your rules... Learn to share Bob.

This isn't sharing, this is gobbling the whole.

CFC would be interested in promoting such a match if the publicity value was there.

Depends what Mississauga CC and Scarborough CC agree on.

I'll have to wait for a Scarborough CC executive to respond on this idea ( I'm not on the SCC Executive ).

First have a match at one club's location, then a rematch at the other club's location later on. Simple. :)

That's what the RA club and the Gatineau club did in one recent year.

These are shoestring budget ideas. If you want to spend zero on promotion, you will get zero return. You will not get mainstream media coverage at a chess event at your local club venue. As for transportation and parking expenses, I expect most chess players would be happy to incur the expense if there was a lot to be gained as far as chess promotion. I have yet to see members of your clubs posting responses here to the idea. Now if half of the 100 players of each club were willing to make their own way, the other 50 could be transported by bus for which expenses could be raised by personal sponsorships (some of which I could solicit). Another thought, at the main scoreboard, I mentioned an individual table for each club to promote their own program. Well additional tables could be set up to give information for a number of groups that might benefit. Groups such as the CFC, the OCA, the GTCL, Chess 'n Math could each have their own table with informative literature. Each table could sponsor the promotion for say $200 to offset the cost of the bus rental and hot dogs and sodas for all the players. Furthermore, does anyone doubt that each of the cities would not send a council member as a representative? - considering the photo-ops.
So please open your imagination to an east-west chess match on 100 tables and think of the visual impact on both the passers-by and the TV cameras. I can virtually guarantee mainstream news coverage - I am willing to bet on it if there are any takers.

Despite all evidence to the contrary! I will let our numbers speak for themselves. Although, we did only get 140 players last night, so I hope that isn't a trend.

Anyhow, convincing 100 players from each club to travel to downtown Toronto in very unlikely to succeed. Better to spend our efforts on projects more likely to succeed. A home and home match is more plausible. However, as I understand it, SCC facility can't hold 200 players.

Another idea maybe to hold a 100 board match: Mississauga vs. The World. We could hold it at the Square One Mall, a very busy and big mall in Mississauga, guaranteed mega visibility. Any sponsors? :D
