General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I just finished reading the poll about the CCN emag. It got me to thinking...when did I receive the last one? I checked the email and it was Aug 30th when I got the Aug issue. It seems like we are behind.
Does anyone know when the next issue will be out? It is October and we still do not have the Sept issue. Since the emag is contracted out, are there financial penalties when deadlines are not met?
The CFC website says it is to be published on the 4th of each month, and since I save all the emails, I can see that only happens about half the time. If you can't get an emag out on time, what can you do?
I'm not privy to the exact publication date but I do know that September and October are being combined as a double issue, so I'd guess later this month.
The Sept-Oct issue of CCN is in the hands of Michael/Gerry to distribute. I would expect that those CFC members with valid e-mail addresses on file will receive their notification in a few days. We are hoping to be able to eliminate the clumsy password key that we've put on the publication (to avoid actually mailing the pdf file) at the web site and make it available for members and non-members alike in the near future.
The recent Governor's meeting authorized the Executive to establish a committee to review the CCN. I am one of the members and would be happy to any comments. I expect to be conducting a poll on the magazine down the road.
I think our key point is to consider "What do we have to do to increase readership of the magazine". This is one of our primary focus points to try and increase our membership base, along with CFC tournaments, and the web site.
For myself personally, I want my CFC membership to go towards a high quality publication with the widest audience we can reach. I do not mind if CCN is also available to non members. It is not the exclusivity of my access, but the quality of the product (both in terms of content and aesthetic criteria) that makes me feel I'm getting value for my money.
If CCN could add me to the mailing list, that would increase readership.
Not necessarily, Alan... you might glance at the first issue you receive, but probably not at subsequent ones. IMHO, there is nothing in CCN worth reading. (I hasten to add that I haven't actually looked at the thing for a year....)

What might improve readership is promoting it online as a free info source. Of course, meeting deadlines and informing readership that issues are to be combined would also do the trick. Right now it is a Mickey Mouse operation from top to bottom - content to layout to punctuality. Which is odd, since it is being bankrolled by our membership dues. Can you imagine how long it would last in the real world if it was surviving on advertising and subscriptions? Can you imagine a business person looking at it and thinking the CFC was something to invest in? No chance. Right now it is a liability for our image and our finances, and it has been for years and years.

I'm not supposed to be seeing the publication because I'm not a member. However, I don't agree with much of what you wrote. It's simply not that bad.
I'm not making suggestions because they don't appear to take my suggestions very well.
The problem for the organization seems to be money. They should do what was done when the magazine was started in the 1970's. Raise the membership fees significantly. Running a federaton on goodwill is nice. Running a federation with money is a bit more practical.
I seem to recall the CFC grew after the changes and large membership fee increase.

That's probably true, but wasn't there an American gentleman called Fishing, or something, who was generating a lot of press in the 70's. That might have had something to do with the membership increase.

Yes. However, the magazine and changes came after he won the world championship. Unless my memory is failing. Still, interest was high for several years following the win and also the failure to defend the title.
(Please excuse my poor english... hoping you'll understand my «point de vue» anyway!)
I think any magazin is from old times.
Why wait a particular time to read canadian chess articles ? CFC should use their own site to PUBLISH as they received them, the articles.
The visitors should be able to read and play all the games directly on the web without any particular software. (HTML and javascript).
Their should be a column (web page) on the site reserved to any particular column on CCN.
I agree with M. Jobin. It makes no sense for people to wait for news. The e-zine combines the worst of both online and print media. It is slow like print media but it is ephemeral like most things on the web.
As for content, I think most people with computers who are interested in general chess news can find:
The CFC should have news that is unique to the CFC membership. That means Canadian content. If I care about the European Team Championship (for example) I will probably already know what happened, and if I don't I will know where to look long before the e-zine arrives in my Inbox.
