General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
agreed, with 6 rounds, it will be inaccurate to determine top 3 in most open sections, but probably good enough to determine 1st place unless there are more than 64 players in that section.
just wondering why CFC doesn't have relatively fixed CYCC rules, the organizers can change so many things like number of rounds, entry fees, playoff or not, prize etc.
personal opinion, 2011 seems to be the best among the CYCCs in recent years.
I suppose that as long as organizers are an endangered species, the CFC can't be too choosy about all the details, and things like prizes, entry fees and so on really are up to them, within reason. However it does seem to me that such basic things as number of rounds, play-offs, and stuff that directly impacts the actual chess.....the integrity of the competition......should be mandated? Presumably the laws of chess are to be followed......:D
The CFC has specific rules regarding the entry fees for the CYCC. We are following those rules. The prizes for the winners are essentially a paid Trip to the WYCC. It is expected that the cost of sending the team to the 2013 WYCC, which is being held in the U.A.R., will be about $40,000. Hopefully there will be sufficient CYCC entries to cover this cost.
The organising committee has discussed at length the appropriate number of rounds. 6 rounds is theoretically enough to decide a winner from 64 plsyers. In previous CYCC's most of the sections were under 30 players but we expect, based on previous CYCC's, that probably 2 sections will involve 40-45 players. We could have played a a seventh round for all sections on the 4th day i.e. the saturday morning, but decided instead that 6 rounds would be sufficient and we left the Saturday morning open for tie breaks and other chess related fun events for all of the CYCC participants.

This is not entirely correct.
CFC gives the difference between $1000CA and the FIDE WYCC fee of 100 euro and eventually cost of the visa for that country (around $850CA). If the plane to WYCC is less then this amount, then the statement is correct.

Since the flight should probably cost twice that amount, does it mean that CYCC winners will have to pay at least 1000$ to go to the WYCC? I wonder if we could do something about that...
The rules for the CYCC as published on the CFC web site have been amended several times over the years and are somewhat confusing. Nevertheless they do state that of the $225 entry fee, $75 goes to the local organiser, 15% to the CFC for admin expenses such as Visa costs etc. and the balance to the CYCC fund. The CYCC fund is to be used to pay travel expenses for the winners in each category to that years WYCC. If the fund is insufficient it will be divided amongst the CYCC winners on a pro-rata basis. Travel expenses for other WYCC participants is at the players own cost.
It is expected that the travel costs for next years WYCC will be about $2,000 per player. The CFC usually pays for a Captain and a Coach. Visa costs for each person travelling to the U.A.R. is about $170 per person.
Accordingly the cost to send the 16 player team is about $40.000. Hopefully there will be enough participants in the 2013 CYCC in Ottawa to fund the whole team

Return flights Toronto-Dubai can be in the $1350-$1450 range if you're willing to fly with lesser-known airlines such as Austrian or Egyptair. Emirates (the only non-stop service) is $1800+.
The tournament is being held in Al-Ain about 80 miles from Dubai. Expedia.ca currently gives a price for american airlines from Toronto to Dubai with 2 stops for $1351 for dates suitable for the event. American airlines also gives a price of $1750 with only one stop Emirates gives a price of $2,300 non stop from toronto but this may include a visa to the UAR. You can also fly to AL-Ain from Quatar but the fare from Toronto using this route would be about $2,000.

Why dont we hold the round 7 on jul 13 morning ( sat ) instead of tie-break ? this way there will be less problems ahead...if it is necessary, then we hold the tie break in the afternoon....

The flight ticket price is pretty much depending on how early you book it. It is only one month between CYCC and WYCC in 2013. Most of players would like to decide to go WYCC or not after the CYCC, which will make the price much higher than normal. Understood that it all because of the WYCC schedule is much earlier than before, however if CYCC can be held around Apr/May, it will be great. BTW, why CYCC has to be bound with Canadian open each year?
1. Cut CYCC to 6 rounds doesn't look like a smart idea. 7-th round is much more important than play-off (WYCC doesn't have play-off at all, uses computer tie-break instead).
2. Organizers want to increase entry fee per game by 50%.
175/7=25 CAD.
225/6=37.5 CAD.
3. How section with 7 or 8 players will be played? 6 rounds Swiss?
4. Looks like for organizers CO is the main project, CYCC is just a small addition. I think, it should be opposite. CYCC, Canadian Closed, Canadian Junior all are National championships; CO is just a nice tournament.

This year's WYCC will pay accomodations and food for every participant which is usual only for the official representatives in past years. Does anyone know how long it takes to get a visa to the United Arab Emirates?

As long as you fly with their airline...
"Canadian travellers can now apply for and purchase UAE visas online via www.emirates.com. All ticketed Emirates customers, regardless of whether their ticket was purchased via a travel agent, online via www.emirates.com, or directly from an Emirates call centre or retail shop, may log-in to ‘Manage a Booking’ on www.emirates.com and access the application tool. Both 96 hour and 30 day visas are available and these will be issued via email within 3-4 working days," said a statement isued by Emirates airline."
