Re: Aronian - Carlsen - who's going to win?

According to the commentator Grischuk played the "principled" 15...e4 (against Magnus' position resulting from 1.e4) but might have underestimated Magnus' counterplay. Magnus wrapped it up quite nicely and is now tied for the lead with Aronian with 3/4.

Chucky sacked the Nd5 brilliantly (not that I understood the complications) and the board erupted in insane tactics and then an amazing perpetual = draw. Highly entertaining for the fans.

Kramnik had pressure on Radjabov's king position in Radjabov's time pressure but chose to keep maneuvering and now its past time control.

Rd 5 Svidler looks like he is developing a nice attacking position against Gelfand.

Kramnik pseudo-sacrificed the A pawn for a nice initiative and open lines against Aronian.

Chucky played the subtle Bf4 variation against the Grunfeld and has nice pressure against Magnus. Interesting watching Magnus defend. The position is right on the edge - very tense.

Kramnik has the two bishops, a passed pawn, the center and had been moving quickly until his first long think of the game! But after 25 minutes thought he chose the immediate Qxd5 and if he had played Rxc8 first the computer would have evaluated it +1 more in his favour. Interesting. I wonder what he examined and his conclusions. It looks like he chose the safer edge of the two bishops and passed pawn in the endgame. The downside was that Aronian was getting short on time and if Kramnik had kept the tension - who knows? Thats the pressures of thinking in top flight chess. We'll see if Kramnik can win the endgame.

Magnus resourcefully sacked the e7 pawn in order to capture the strong Bf4 and induce doubled pawns. In doing so he is also slowly getting more play for his pieces. However Chucky still has some interesting variations to examine. Time pressure is coming? What will happen? Its exciting.

Interestingly Chucky trades queens and heads for the endgame with his "extra pawn" but Magnus has good play for his pieces. Is this the turning point of the game?

Grischuk decided to play a closed postion with Ne5 outpost and a safe small edge. However the computer judges that Radjabov has enough counterplay.

Svidler played the crazily complicated e6 (instead of opting for the forcing Nd6) and the position has turned into a delicious madhouse of tactical complications.

Gelfand saw thru the complications and had enough to hold. Impressive play by Gelfand = draw.

Sometimes "boring" positions can reveal hidden resources. Radjabov waited until Grischuk's time pressure to cagily sacrifice a bishop to get 3 connected passed pawns! Now I cant see how Grischuk is going to defend! The boring game suddenly went to the most interesting one.

Magnus used his incredible endgame skills to hold the draw. How does a 22 yr old (and non-Soviet!) have such great endgame skill? Wow!
