General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:

* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
When the Jays last appeared in the post season (and also happened to win the world series) - 20 years ago (!) - they had so much great talent that an injury curse (if it applied back then) didn't matter so much. I also continue to wonder if any of the concrete under the astroturf at SkyDome has been tested since my old asphalt and soils testing lab workplace in Bramalea did that back in 1988 (not that I was involved). Not only that, maybe astroturf wearing out is a possible factor.
The Leafs will not even make the playoffs, now that the season will go the full schedule. Their last minute collapse against the Bruins in the spring convinced me they still have not lost their amazingly consistent (and heartbreaking) talent for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. I'm still glad I angrily dumped them as my team after 40+ years as a fan.
The Senators, my second choice as a favourite team to root for, are doomed to go nowhere without Alfredsson, though they may just make the playoffs.
My favourite team to root for nowadays, the Canadiens (aka the Smurfs) will hopefully have a better physical prescence, assuming they pick up some bigger players. They will make the playoffs regardless.
I'll also throw in that New Jersey is bound for Hades again, as far as any post season appearance goes.
Leafs are a really well put together team with several young guys in the right time frame to do well but not destroy the cap. Their GM
seems quite intelligent in his choices so far. Tougher division but I still think they make playoffs. Losing Alfredsson doesn't hurt the Senators,
he's well past prime time; what is interesting is they are 12M under the modest salary cap which may hurt them if they are sticking to that
budget. Otherwise have to like their team as well given how they played with injuries last season. Their division has 5 potentially strong teams so the two wild cards may be won; however, if I had to pick two teams that are widely touted but might struggle at times I'd say Detroit ( a fairly old team ) and Montreal. Parity with a modest salary cap makes determining the actual results amongst these teams very difficult.
Another point. the Jays still have problems at catcher. They finally moved Thole in as Dickey's regular catcher, which is good. I'd like to see them get a good veteran catcher to catch the rest of the staff. Strictly beside what I might think of how Arencibia calls a game, on the road he's hitting around a buck fifty for the season. .150 isn't much.
A management shakeup might not be a bad thing.
They gave Arencebia a shot and he failed. Became an even worse version of himself at an age when one might expect at least some modest improvement if not more ( I question his approach to getting better ). So my own opinion has changed considerably on him. I think the Jays need to release/trade Arencebia, Gibbons, Johnson, and maybe Lind ( depends on who they acquire; I'd prefer to drop Cabrera but he's guaranteed ). That would give them a firmer base for possible success and I do believe they'll add 2 to 3 significant players in the off season. If the free agent market doesn't get the job done they may trade Bautista for a premium starting pitcher.
Lawrie should be star caliber next season, Dickey should be a little bit better. How they do will depend heavily on their acquisitions ( at CA/SP/LF ) and whether from Morrow/Stroman/etc a reliable starter emerges.
