General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
W.So came and played in Canada in several tournaments. He even honored one weekend Open in Toronto. Or maybe he came just that his picture would be taken?! LOL
Yeah... and he cake-walked Toronto, Montreal and Calgary tourneys and won them all :)
Re: Wesley So listed as federation "CAN"?
No doubt, W.So is a great chess player. Few other points from your posts look ... not exactly right.
1. " Philippines has more foreign reserves than Canada". So what? Why we can see huge immigration from Philippines to Canada (like from other developing countries like China, India, Russia... All those countries have great foreign reserves)? Why we almost don't see immigration from Canada to Philippines if Philippines is such a wealthy country?
2. "The Philippines B team could trounce the Canadian Olympic team anytime". Let's just look at the numbers. Average rating for top-5 PHI active players is 2593. Second team (6-10) has only 2495. Canadian top-5 team (Kovalyov, Hansen, Spraggett, Sambuev, Charbonneau) has average rating of 2544.
In one match everything could happen, but I don't see any significant advantage even for first PHI team, the second one is just lower rated. Actually without W.So first teams have almost the same rating.
3. "The phils has hosted a chess olympiad. Canada has not and never will". How do you know? Who told you? Canada has hosted 3 Olympiads (1976, 1988, 2010) and has everything to host the Chess Olympiad. If Canada will - it's another story.

1. OK. Perhaps you haven't gotten my point. It is arrogance for someone to say that the FIDE registration fee for Philippine players equals their GDP. This is humbug language. Now what I am saying is perhaps we do not know that Philippines have more foreign reserves than Canada. So let us not trumpet our horns and think for one minute before we diss another country. . FYI, Canada selects immigrants who have money and skills. If you are impoverished you have no chance of getting in. You can take this to the bank. And I am not talking about refugees.
don't belittle other countries because things are changing fast...
If you take out the 2012 Olympiad players the Philippines B team averages 2530. There's no shortage of tournaments in Asia and these guys play a lot. These are all government sponsored events. Where have Canadian players won outside of their country lately ? Unless So, Li Chao and Ganguly immigrate here we're long ways to go.
3. out of context... I am talking CHESS OLYMPIAD. This is a chess FORUM remember ? I remember the Canadian chess team scrounging for private donations so its chess team can participate in the 2012 Olympiad in Istanbul.. It hurts to think than we can cancel gas plants and waste 1.2 billion dollars and not even send our chess players to the olympiad.

Do you read what is written? Look once more: "I would think the FIDE transfer fees would be the same as the GDP of a small country, so I find it hard to believe he can be changing federations."
Where in this sentence mentioned PHILIPPINE GDP? Is Philippine a small country? LOL Larger than UK and many other countries, population is triple of CAN.
Somewhere over the time you lost sense of humor. ;)
Re : Re: Wesley So listed as federation "CAN"?
Take your time and read carefully the first post (even if it's not written in your first language). It is said the the fees should be the same as the GDP of a small country. Not of Philippines. And if anything, it was a criticism toward FIDE.
Nobody lacked of respect toward Wesley So or Philippines. You are the one being arrogant toward Canadians.

HOW ABOUT THIS COMMENT SOMEWHERE ON THE THREAD....
Re: Wesley So listed as federation "CAN"?
FIDE has Wesley So - and all players from the Philippines - listed as unrated. My guess is that the Philippines are in arrears to FIDE.
WESLEY SO IS UNRATED WITH FIDE ? AS WELL AS ALL PHILIPPINE PLAYERS ?? PHILIPPINES CAN'T PAY THE FIDE BILLS. ?? common !!!!!

It is actually the truth. Gm So wanted to play in last year's Quebec Open, but couldn't as Philippines had not paid their FIDE fees. We talked to both him and his coach, and even though they seemed frustrated by the situation, they couldn't do anything.
Maybe I missed the news, but lately I noticed that Wesley So is listed with federation "CAN" (Canadian) - especially in results shown on Susan Polgar's blog...
I know that his parents live in Scarborough (or at least I have heard that...) and of course he will be attending Webster U. but what is with the federation change from PHI? I would think the FIDE transfer fees would be the same as the GDP of a small country, so I find it hard to believe he can be changing federations.
Whatever was true when the original post by Kerry was entered, Wesley So is now listed as Filipino, and all the other top Filipino players are also listed, so, presumably, any arrears in payment (that may have existed) has been sorted out with FIDE.
