  • The IMF predicts growth of over 4% for the coming year. Wrong direction, no hope for us geniuses.

      • Economic growth. We seem bent upon meeting the tipping-point deadline you speak of, if not exceeding it by tipping early. We need a miracle, Bob. ET, Jesus, the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, the "shift", the "transition"... what I have long termed mass/inversion.

          • Hi Brad:

            Sorry I misinterpreted you.

Definitely the world economy MUST grow for capitalism to work.

Sustainability and production for need (Not luxury) are nowhere on the radar.

And the growth is despite the somewhat muted hew and cry about negative climate change, and the suicide path capitalism is putting humanity on.

This past week's participation rate is almost dead on the pace since the start of the thread.

It seems that the importance of the climate change topic is keeping interest alive in ongoing information on negative climate change, and in the debates around certain climate change issues.

Which is why only radical population reduction will save us, which is why we have the pandemic/cull which will continue until our population is not large enough for us to pose a serious threat to Nature.

Bob, you should add glacier melt in Antarctic to you list. Here is another video.

If you come across any modelling to predict yearly sea rise due to Antarctic glacier melt, please let us know. I haven't found anything definitive yet.

You can remove "Antartic", they melt everywhere.

                      • I have heard the two polar ice caps called "the refrigerators of the planet".

Their melting will increase the rate of heat rise in the atmosphere below our slowly becoming more impervious canopy we've created just beyond our atmosphere. The heat being trapped will have an additional source (the decrease in natural air cooling) beyond sun radiation reflection.

                        • A chunk of Antarctic ice that was one of the biggest icebergs ever seen has met its end near the island of South Georgia. Scientists will be studying its effects on the ecosystem around the island for some time.

I think most people do not realize the potential danger from Antarctic melting. On the maps, it looks lie this tiny area at the bottom of the world. Well, the area of Antarctica is 14,200,000 square kilometres. To put that in context, Australia is about half the size at 7,700,000 square kilometres.

The World Oceans cover 71% off the planet or 361,000,000 square kilometres. Antarctica is covered in ice, if one foot of it melted, that would translate to approx. half an inch globally.

                            12 inches x 14.2/361 = 0.47 inches

I don't have the topography of Antarctica, ie. what is the breakdown of ice versus rock above sea level, but the highest elevation is Mount Vinson at 16,050 feet.

If anyone runs across the math on this, ie. volume of ice above sea level, how much is expected melt over what time frame, I would love to see the calculations. Run the model on this.

According to quora.com the Antarctica ice sheet has an approx. volume of thirty million cubic kilometers. According to the West Boldon Lodge FB page, nearly 3% of that volume is penguin urine. I find that hard to believe. Anyway, I have a new policy now: I'm no longer providing links and if anyone questions my information I'm going to verbally abuse them. :)

Thanks Peter. So if the entire continent melts, 30 million cubic kilometres that would translate into a global sea level rise of 3,272 inches, or 273 feet.

                                39,370 inches / kilometre x 30,000,000 / 361,000,000 = 3,272 inches.

As for the penguin urine, let us hope for a miracle in that it somehow congeals around Mar a Lago. After all, Trump does love his golden toilets.
