General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Good morning Bob, I just watched a documentary on Netflix called Youth V Gov following a court case in the US where 21 young people suing the government over climate change. I think. we can all guess how that turned out, but it has spawned new cases in 25 countries including Canada.
Thanks Bob G - my wife has Netflix.......I'll look for it.
I'm afraid citizen legal action is not going to upend the current situation, though it may accomplish some things.
The only solution, as far as I can see, Is a revolution at the ballot box. The Green Party is probably best poised to offer a radical climate change program, although perhaps new parties, driven by youth, may arise.
Current world governments, beholden to the capitalist system, will never be allowed to do what is necessary........it would affect the oligarchs' bottom line too dramatically.
The the activity in the thread has stayed steady this last week, though lower than the 2022 Average so far..
This is understandable since there were many more posts per week in the beginning than now, as everyone had their say. I have now settled into trying to make 5-6 climate change posts per week, to keep everyone up on the latest information.
I would encourage other chesstalk'ers to post here, as well, climate change items of interest they come across, to share the newest information.
The Pressing Climate Change Issue
The core issue, IMHO, IS how to get society to perceive the issue as URGENT, as it is.
What action is needed from climate activists to “AWAKEN” the public that this issue cannot just continuously be kicked down the road? Nature's Tipping point is estimated to be, on current trajectory, only 9 years away (Around Jan. 1, 2031).
The last report of the UN Climate Change Panel clearly stated that the window of opportunity to save ourselves is fast closing. Capping the temperature rise at only 1.5 degrees Celsius is now impossible. It noted that current government deadlines were totally insufficient to solve the problem. CO 2 must be capped by 2025! And for the first time, CO 2 removal has now become a necessary part of the solution.
Time is fast running out!
The Large Picture Solutions
Can we come up with at least one or two viable suggestions of impressive, radical things that might wake up the public, that we could then put out there to other concerned client activists?
CT'ers' Local Actions on Climate Change
You can do something! When you like one of this thread's links on an aspect of climate change, spread the news by posting it to your social media accounts and other Websites/Discussion Boards you participate in!
There is an almost 50% chance that we will fail to reach our global warming target of keeping the Earth's yearly average temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit).
The global temperature will reach a yearly average of 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels of the late 1800s at least once between now and 2026! That is within 4 years, at best!!
This is a very bright red warning signal in climate change negotiations and science.

Morning Bob, I read your post and wondered if it was good news. Only a 50% chance of surpassing 1.5? but of course it is actually bad news because it is much sooner than expected.
"Geneva, 9 May 2022 (WMO) - There is a 50:50 chance of the annual average global temperature temporarily reaching 1.5 °C above the pre-industrial level for at least one of the next five years – and the likelihood is increasing with time, according to a new climate update issued by the World Meteorological Organization"
and of course it will continue upwards and upwards.....2 degrees, 3 degrees, ........
I was reading about drought in California, and hoping it would envelope more red states so it becomes a political issue this year.
But with all the political issues in the USA, they have now added Abortion thus pushing climate change further down the agenda.

OMG! Are you wishing bad things happen to fellow human beings? Did you not say in another post: The truth is both groups are made up of people, some good some bad, "the good, bad, and the ugly".???

Bad things are happening, global warming is real. People are now dying from the effects of climate change, drought, heat waves, hurricanes, etc. etc. It will get much worse as time progresses, a global effort will be needed for civilization to survive. Most of the world is on board and ready to do their part, but a few key groups are holding back the efforts. One of those groups is the far right Republican party / Trump Cult, who control the red states. If by some miracle Mother Nature could focus the harmful effects of climate change onto these areas and convince them to wake up and accept that global warming is real, then maybe we can still save life on Earth.

Instant Karma. This sort of miracle is surely needed, and not only with respect to the environment. We need a world wherein if we try to punch someone in the nose then our fist will only hit ourselves in the face. Soon bullets and bombs will go around their targets and hit the person who shot them. There is no other way for Nature to stop us from hurting each other. We are too stupid, corrupt and essentially evil to reform ourselves. So we will be reformed by force.
