  • Chess Talk (Canada) vs OzChess (Australia) from move 10

Here are the first 9 moves of the game. It is Canada to play move 10. I have stuck this post to the top of the board to make it easier to see what is happening.

If someone could generate a diagram for this position, that would be appreciated.

Alex Devine, in this position, says:

    "I vote for 10. Ne5.

Keep his pawns stuck on light squares, and keep the queenside from helping out with defense.

    10. ...gxh5 can be met with 11. Be3, so that shouldn't be a problem."

    Any other suggestions?

In this position 10.hxg6 would be my choice.

It eliminates the possibility of a capture on h5 and creates a weak pawn on g6 if Black recaptures as would be expected.

There is no chance of ...e5 even as a sac at the moment since dxe5 would win a piece.

Larry, it would be easer to see if there were something to look at, like a diagram of the position ;)

Btw, can someone please post a link to a good chess diagram generator that anyone can use for a post on chesstalk?

          Here you go!

There's a diagram generator builtin to this site. Just go [ DIAGRAM]FEN[/DIAGRAM]
I used chessgames.com to move pieces and extract the FEN.

I vote for Bd3 to force Qe8, then Nb5 to force Na6, then hxg6 hxg6 Ne5 winning. (Please insert some careful analysis to be sure this is sound.)

            Thanks Alan.

I have not analysed *carefully* but what did you have in mind (following your 10.Bd3) after 10...gxh5 with the idea 11.Rxh5 Qe8. (?)

That's the position Alan gave after Black's 9th move. I thought I'd give it again as a test, and in case anyone wants to see it as a more recent post.

                um, perhaps if 10. Bd3 gxh5, then 11. Bxf6 Rxf6 12. Rxh5 Rh6 13. Nh4 planning Rxh6 then Qh5

on the other hand, hxg6 seems like a good idea too.

Grab the pawn: hxg6 (hg Bd3 and Ne5)

I change my vote to 10. hxg6, with the idea of 11. Ne5. And my previous post meant Bd3, not Be3 :)

That gives four votes for hxg6 and one vote for Bd3.

                              10. hxg6 it is then. I'll go ahead and post it over there.
