Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:

Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.

14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

Putting out feelers: St. John's, NL for Canadian Open or Closed?
Normally, the Canadian Open and Canadian Closed are held in central areas within the country - well, except for Edmonton and Kapuskasing ;-)
I'm wondering what players would think about having either or both of these tournaments held in St. John's, NL in 2011.
Granted this would increase travel times and possibly rates, however St. John's is a beautiful city, and players could definitely profit from the atmosphere and accomodations, as well as many attractions that exist in and around the city.
Please respond to the poll, and if your answer is 'no', a reply with some details would be appreciated.

Canadian Open in St. John's, why not? Ottawa, Montreal and Edmonton were not that close to me but were worth going to, for different reasons. It'd be nice if it was walking distance from the water, preferably some sort of beach :)

Absolutely YES. Travelling to Canadian Open's has been a great way to see Canada. I have but one province to visit, Newfoundland & Labrador. Go for it.:)

I have been to Newfoundland many times, and it is an absolutely fabulous place. I voted No however, because airfare from anywhere to St. John's is unbelievably high. Driving/taking the ferry is likewise prohibitively expensive (the ferry part). The Closed is quite a different case than the Open - they should not be considered related.
IMHO the Open Championship has to be held in a large metropolitan area.

In my experience, it has cost me more to go to St. John's from Toronto than a round-trip to Hawaii... That is exactly what I mean.
Last time I checked the ferry prices are brutal too (whether you take the ~6hr ferry to west side --followed by 8hr drive to St. John's -- or the ~16 hour ferry to East side (to Argentia, near(er) St. John's). The ferry is a very large ship for sure but the accommodations are somewhat spartan and they occasionally have to hose it out (if you get my meaning). The shorter ferry is clearly cheaper since you don't have to pay for a cabin for such a relatively short ride.
Once you GET THERE, Newfoundland is beautiful and the people are welcoming...

Granted that travelling to St. John's from anywhere west of Toronto could get expensive, those who visit the individual airline websites regularly will find seat sales that go on from time to time. I booked my July/August round trip from St. John's to Montreal in January and paid about half price.
Flying from Quebec or Ontario is generally less expensive than driving, considering the fee for the ferry. However, the drive is quite nice, and once here you would not have to rent a car. Also, there are quite a few attractions on the way to and through Newfoundland that one would miss when flying.
Keep up the banter... I'm seriously considering approaching some people in the area to put together a proposal.

Edmonton is central to those living in the Western half of the country. The Windsor to Quebec City corridor is convenient to a larger population, but to be truly a Canadian Open and not simply an Ontario/Quebec Open it should be allowed to travel without discrimination. The number of entrants could be quite small however, relative to past Opens, and the tournament committee would require substantial backing to pull it off. If they wish to have it then more power to them. I would not consider it a viable project though without a significant infusion of money.

I would not attend barring a sudden lottery win between now and then. I get two weeks vacation a year or ten days since I don't work weekends except in emergencies. I would probably have to use seven vacation days to make that trip and fit in all the rounds and the travel time.

but in that case, it doesn't matter where it is unless it is in your home town. You can't go.

I was the tournament director for the one Canadian Open that was held in St.John's...it was a great event and some players consider it to be the best of all Canadian Opens...I would be delighted to see the 2010 Open in St.John's and would definitely be a participant. Phil Haley
