General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
We now return the subject to CHESS (there are Covid threads available for posting in the non-chess area).
Regarding funding:
The ACA (Alberta Chess Association) used to (maybe they still do?) raise money by running "casinos".
The FQE gets about $100k annually from the Quebec government. That pays for a full-time employee, some part-timers, and some left over for tournaments (prize money and/or bringin in foreign players).
Back around 2008, the OCA (Ontario Chess Association) received a "Trillium" grant of $120k, which seemed to disappear. Here are links to a couple of Chesstalk threads on the subject:
If you are saying that the Government is killing the children's immune systems then maybe it's time for the parents to start looking at the Children's life style and boosting their immune system.. You get Vitamin D from supplements and playing in the sun outdoors. You don't get it from playing games texting or watching TV.. How may parents really know what their children do in a day? They ship them off to day care when they are too young to go to school. The teachers don't really help them in my opinion of getting them out into the sun as the computers have ruled their world now.. How many parents actually spend time with their kids when they are home, take them out on walks let them play on the swings in the parks. Watch they play catch run and just play. outside? People are killing their own immune systems.
Do you read much? Innate immune suppression by SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccinations: The role of G-quadruplexes, exosomes, and MicroRNAs
"These disturbances potentially have a causal link to neurodegenerative disease, myocarditis, immune thrombocytopenia, Bell's palsy, liver disease, impaired adaptive immunity, impaired DNA damage response and tumorigenesis. We show evidence from the VAERS database supporting our hypothesis. We believe a comprehensive risk/benefit assessment of the mRNA vaccines questions them as positive contributors to public health."
Does anybody know how many youth in Canada play chess already? I doubt it. Surely CFC membership is just a drop in the bucket. You can get all the chess you can handle for free, at any time. And the quality is better and more consistent. Also high quality instruction of all kinds is easily available. Do we really think that slotting chess into the school system is going to get us where we want? Lacrosse is a sport. Not much popularity there. What, we want to make chess part of a teacher's training? Who is going to write the program? We can't even agree amongst ourselves on the best way to teach chess. This ain't the old Soviet Union.. A Chess master in every school? Looks like some of you chess instructors are signing to put yourself out of a job. No plan, nothing. Just make it a sport and funding will magically happen. At the very least we do a little market research and try to make a case.

FWIW in the 1970s, the Alberta Government funded The Alberta Youth Chess Association TAYCA with chess master Branimir Brebich heading up the association. It was very popular with kids, myself included, and other members of this forum who lived in Alberta at the time. I was very grateful to have participated in tournaments and learned about real tournament chess. I am confident it helped many Alberta kids gain good life skills.

When Ontarip lotteries started they were looser with the money. The largest funded chess event was the David Levy versus computer match at the CNE in 1978. Peter Biyiasas, Joel Benjamin, and Joe Smolij were part of the paid staff.
Lottery money has funded equipment for many chess clubs, especially for juniors or seniors. Didnt they buy the OCA chess clocks that travelled from tournament to tournament?

Yes - I remember people talking about TAYCA during the 1979 Canadian Open in Edmonton (where I played you and we drew). I don't think it lasted much longer. Maybe it was around as early as the 1975 Canadian Open in Calgary?

founded 1973 or 1974 I think. Certainly before the Calgary Canadian open
Educate yourself. DON'T WAIT FOR A MEDICAL EMERGENCY!
Was listening to the City News on am radio today during the storm. A report was aired about paramedic departments being on full staffing across the GTA because of all the 911 calls coming in, and this full staffing was insufficient and people were having to wait long times to even get an ambulance.
Gee, I sure hope it wasn't affecting anyone Olga knows ... or Bob Gillanders ... or Neil Frarey .... or anyone else who signed the petition and resides in Ontario. I don't even know if Olga resides in Ontario, she has been airing her grievances while disclosing nothing about herself.
EDIT: ok, she has a LinkedIn page ... she hasn't posted anything there. She went to some institute of "linguistic studies" in Belarus ... so I guess that's where she's from. She seems to reside in Toronto since 2011, works as a contract teacher. Nothing special ... I guess this is the best the CFC can do for a Vice President.
I think Mr. Gillanders' "We can't have nice things" should become an internet meme. It's laughable except for knowing that Canadians are suffering and / or dying needlessly while the Ontario government gives out money for surfing (not web surfing, although who knows, they might give out money for that too).....

EDIT: I am also in favor of poker in school curriculum (obviously not for money). The reason is that poker teaches everything that chess does, plus it adds the concept of randomness and bad beats. If kids can learn to take bad beats, they will be better adjusted to the world where there is randomness everywhere and bad beats happen all the time. Chess teaches that pure logic and calculation always leads to success, which would be defined as "not losing", but if kids buy into that, then they are ill prepared to handle the real world.
And now you want to add poker to the curriculum? So now we have more expenses on the backs of taxpayers? After spending so much time attacking Olga for that very thing, aren't you being a hypocrite?

.... So I feel totally satisfied that I have called her greedy, although since there is no background information about her, we who don't know her don't know her true motivations. Perhaps she has a boyfriend or girlfriend who wants to make money at chess, or perhaps she herself wants to do that. At least she was very clear, right in this thread, that indeed she is trying to grab at taxpayer money and she wants it to go to primarily to fund competitive chess prize money, which would only benefit those who are exceptionally gifted at chess. Perhaps she is herself exceptionally gifted? If yes, then this really smacks of a personal agenda. ....
Do you not have any decency at all, Pargat? You have attacked Olga over and over in this thread. You've attacked her for, according to you, not caring about children. You've attacked her for, according to you, questionable morals/ethics. You've attacked her for, according to you, being a greedy money grabber. You've told her that you hope karma catches up with her (which, as I understand it, is a really nasty thing to say to someone). And on and on you go ad nauseam. And now you openly admit that you know nothing about Olga!! In effect you've been spouting a bunch of libelous nonsense. And then, after making that admission, you go on to make some stuff up about Olga, total speculation, so that you can attack her again using the bullshit you just made up!! You're a real fucking piece of work. Pargat Perrer, Mr. Important with his bigshot contacts and influence. Why don't you fuck the hell off and go someplace that is worthy of the amazing Mr. Pargat Perrer.

Is there any possibility of a truce in this thread, just temporary, for let's say, 2 days: from 2:15 PM EST, today (Saturday, Dec. 24 [Christmas Eve Day] to Monday, Dec. 26 @ 2:15 PM)?
Beside the Christian Christmas, there are other religious holidays, as well, that like "peace", even if just temporary.
I'll even accept myself being attacked again (I am a Democratic Marxist, after all) @ 2:16 PM on Monday.

Just my 2 cents.

Merry Christmas, Bob. :)
