General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
All the babble from the so called "scientists" won't change much, if anything.
Yeah, folks. Nothing that scientists learn is very important. Scientists, for instance, had nothing to do with the computers that have revolutionized your daily lives and made posting on this forum, indeed it's very existence, possible.
Scientists had nothing to do with the invention of liquid crystals, which make the little characters appear on my screen as I write this. Nor lasers. Einstein did not explain the existence of the photoelectric effect nor write the equations on which it is based, thus making the laser possible.
Nope, scientists had nothing to do with these, or any of the other things we see all around us. We cannot, for instance, send a probe to mars or the moon because the scientists all failed to develop the equations by which we can do so.
These were actually all invented by Gary Ruben, who is ever so much smarter than I since he said so himself!
At last some news from a fair and balanced source which has a viewership several times that of the left wing news outlets like CNN or MSNBC aka the Al Gore Networks.
So, what has this to do whether men can and do now cause both forest fires and climate change? Why nothing at all, that's what.
The assumption that men cause climate change has no validity since nature can cause 100 times higher effect on climate. Analyze the rise in magma temperature over last 150 years and you will realize that men can do nothing as far as climate is concern.

Well, Ernest, unless you yourself are an actual scientist with actual published papers in peer reviewed journals, I am afraid that when it comes to choosing between you and those actual scientists, I'm going with them.
I note in passing that, as usual with the deniers, you supply not one shred of evidence in favour of your claims. I expect that this is because you have no such evidence to present.

Here the evidence, not from me but from Roy W. Spencer Ph.D. in meteorology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The current frenzy over global warming has galvanized the public and cost taxpayers billons of dollars in federal expenditures for climate research. It has spawned Hollywood blockbusters and inspired major political movements. It has given a higher calling to celebrities and built a lucrative industry for scores of eager scientists. In short, ending climate change has become a national crusade.
And yet, despite this dominant and sprawling campaign, the facts behind global warming remain as confounding as ever.
In Climate Confusion, distinguished climatologist Dr. Roy Spencer observes that our obsession with global warming has only clouded the issue. Forsaking blindingly technical statistics and doomsday scenarios, Dr. Spencer explains in simple terms how the climate system really works, why man's role in global warming is more myth than science, and how the global warming hype has corrupted Washington and the scientific community.
The reasons, Spencer explains, are numerous: biases in governmental funding of scientific research, our misconceptions about science and basic economics, even our religious beliefs and worldviews. From Al Gore to Leonardo DiCaprio, the climate change industry has given a platform to leading figures from all walks of life, as pandering politicians, demagogues and biased scientists forge a self-interested movement whose proposed policy initiatives could ultimately devastate the economies of those developing countries they purport to aid.
Climate Confusion is a much needed wake up call for all of us on planet earth. Dr. Spencer's clear-eyed approach, combined with his sharp wit and intellect, brings transparency and levity to the issue of global warming as he takes on wrong-headed attitudes and misguided beliefs that have led to our state of panic. Climate Confusion lifts the shroud of mystery that has hovered here for far too long and offers an end to this frenzy of misinformation in our lives.

He appears to have some credentials and has written a book. The book will no doubt be referenced often by climate change deniers. His premise is that global warming is caused by natural forces and that climate scientists en masse have not grasped this concept.:o This seems somewhat difficult to believe, but who would have thought US housing prices could drop?
Hopefully he is right, the world is saved, and we can all go back to sleep! :) But let's wait for the "peer review" of his book, shall we.....:D
Hopefully the debate will improve now since the Deniers may now have a more credible source to rely upon. Quotes from Fox news were just way to easy to refute.:D
Vlad, the book is just $ 14.37 at Amazon. Enjoy.

Hey Bob, I like that. I think what you call a refutation is in your dreams. Kind of like finding a refutation to your opponents pet line and then having him bust your refuation over the board.
More priceless is the book you suggest he buy so some writer can make money. Why don't you buy him the book if you want him to read it?
Do you know what I did? After reading the passion with which Paul wrote about solar panels, I bought some stock in a company. A large worldwide company which makes solar panels in Europe and is starting a division in Canada for the FIT program. I think it's somewhere in your part of the province.
So what happens? The volcano explodes and all that volcanic ash falls on those solar panels which are installed. How could I have misjudged so badly? What to do? So I bought shares of a small Brewing company, also in your part of the province. I don't drink beer so have no idea what it tastes like.

Gary, as soon as the volcano exploded, you should have been on a flight to Europe to investigate the solar panels firsthand. Just think, you could be posting from the terminal at Heathrow right now! :D
Only the rushing is heard...
Onward flies the bird.
And who doesn't believe in evolution! Yeah, that's some credible source you got there Ernest!
Tell me, do you also believe that evolution is wrong?
I fail to see what his views on evolution have to do with his analysis of climate change.
Are you saying that somehow his analysis skills are somehow diminished because his views (on a completely unrelated topic) are different than yours?
I looked all over that webpage and must have missed the banner saying "Evolution is a crock too" - can you point to the section where his views on evolution are outlined?
"Many of the new problems produced by human-induced global warming worsen each other. Trying to keep track of the interconnectedness is a little like trying to play -- or even imagine -- 7-dimensional chess."
