General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Yuri Aronov, CFC rating 2266 , heads the list of pre registrants for this Active chess tournament.
Yuri Aronov is the current defendin blitz champion of the week at Mom's Cafe (organized by Vlad Dobrich) , and therefore the current Toronto blitz king of the week as of Saturday April 10,2010. Vlad's Saturday blitz tournaments is by far the strongest in Toronto as titled players play there often e.g. IM Samsonkin, FM Sapozhnikov, and many other titled players.
With just 10 days to go.................the count down begins !!!
Please contact the tournament organizer for any questions.
Erwin, please check with the organizers, but I believe the event has been cancelled.

On the bright side, the website says "We are now taking Pre-registration with payment only for our Recreational and Rated Summer Active Chess Tournaments" Same "deal" as before. Except with no date, a wise move. :p
Erwin, may you confirm or deny this anonymous comment?
Hi Egis,
Before anything else, i love the Lithuanian website you shared on Chesstalk. My life was never the same after that !!! lol. Thanks a lot !!
Admittedly, i have problems with the Lithuanian writings there. I have never been to Lithuania. The closest i have been is Poland -in Gdansk and Ukraine - in Ivano Francsvist.
Sorry for answering your question so late!
I also wish to acknowledge your contribution to the chess in Toronto - the GTA -the photos, the games you posted. You are a great guy!

It has been ages since i last spoke to the organizer and since then i have concentrated on my business and part time work with Strategy Games.
Maybe the organizer posted himself, or a representative - maybe.
When i post things, i use my real name and account for the mistakes and inaccuracies i make and i hold responsibility over the results. No matter what.
This is one of the many things i learned from my parents when i was young.

My wife and I are both executives of non-profit organizations which have over 5,000 members and millions in liquidity. Both organizations have very strict spending rules and we're only allowed to spend a small fraction of the liquidity as seed money for special projects. Our experience tells us the rules work well because all "worthwhile" projects were later fully funded from fees, gifts, and donations, and projects which had little support from our members were not.
It could be useful to know what is the field and aim of that non-profit organization you are in, how they got those "millions in liquidity", what kind of projects they have and how they get so easily funded, etc. Then we could juge for ourselves if by its nature it has any relevance or resemblance to a chess organisation.

As usual, you assume that people with something to offer in terms of the discussion give a flying fig about your judgment in the matter. Judge information, not what you perceive to be qualifications. The kind of people who have this knowledge are not looking to get your permission to share it - they are offering it and you can choose to listen or not. No one is going to force you to, or justify why you should - it's just not worth the effort.

You should have waited for a better opportunity to do your "thing". In this particular instance I was simply asking for more information for everyone's benefit and certainly not passing jugdment.
It is your luck that this is a message board and not a chessboard. Otherwise you would have been checkmated many times already with only big fat zeros to show for it.

May I quote your original post:

How could I have misinterpreted that as you wanting to pass judgment, just because you asked for some further information by which to judge him?
As for the zeros, well, I'm not the one with a life critical stake in the success of chess in Canada. I'm just an interested observer, and if the CFC fails (as it certainly is in danger of doing), my life will continue with zero effect. Yourself?
How could I have misinterpreted that as you wanting to pass judgment, just because you asked for some further information by which to judge him?
Obviously not to judge him, but to judge the relevance of the partial information provided. How could you misinterpret that ? Only two possible explanations: you posess acute misinterpretation capabilities or a vast reservoir of bad faith.
