General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
It wasn't that we lost where I'd imagine fans will be disappointed. It was how we lost. We were ahead 3-0 in the third period. The play got scrambly the opponents scored 5 goals.
The Ottawa Senators have managed to *catch* New Jersey, I noticed. :p
However, for a few years I've been a Montreal fan :p after decades of being far too loyal to the Leafs.
Once the Leafs missed the playoffs three years in a row, which they haven't since being the St. Pats, enough was enough.
I've lost count of how many times in a row it's been by now.
After dumping the Leafs, I went shopping for an Eastern Canadian team to root for, and soon eliminated the Senators.
On political matters, I've learned there's a new party in Canada, the Coffee Party. :)
Here's a link:
The only thing I really know about the Ottawa Senators is Carrie Underwood comes to see them, for some unknown reason. :)
It's always nice to see new political parties, I guess. I don't keep track of them because I don't vote for them. In our first past the post system they have little chance of getting much more than a bit of publicity.
The next Ontario election won't likely turn on the things you pointed out. The Liberals have to run on their record of taxation, management of the electrical system, HST and the ability of the people to afford another 4 years of the same.

The first past the post system normally beats the proportional representation system, in my opinion, and apparently in most Canadians' opinion, since they voted against it when it was once on the Federal ballot some years ago.
There are at least three problems with proportional rep.:
1) Fewer majority governments over time, which can often be a bad thing, say if things urgently need to get done. Instead with proportional rep. you can have endless 'Pizza Parliments' with minority governments, as in Italy.
2) Taking the example of Isreal's Parliament, we see that one or more parties (sometimes that could be seen as extreme) can have a very small number of seats, and yet hold the balance of power. Another effect of 'Pizza Parliment'.
3) Taking the example of 1930s Germany, an extremist party can gain a foothold more easily in a 'Pizza Parliament', then start swinging deals etc. until it actually gains power.
In the case of First Past The Post as it stands in our country, we happen to have an anomoly where minority governments are now also likely to be normal, because of the existence of the Bloc at the Federal level, which either should never have been allowed, or at least the Bloc should have been disbarred after it in effect broke its oath of convenience to Canada's Parliament by subsequently swearing an oath only to Quebec soon after. Plus, imagine if every province had its own version of the Bloc.

This has to be brutal on pensioners.
The Liberals by all rights should lose, of course, but don't discount the power of Dalton's lies and tricks, especially on any voters who haven't been personally affected that badly as yet, and above all the totally flacid effort (to date) put forward by the provincial PCs. If nothing else, many people may park their vote with the NDP, which has a better leader. Then Dalton may salvage a minority government as a result.

that's straight up one of the most disgusting things i've ever read. abandoning your favourite team during a rough stretch is literally worse than child abuse. i can't wait until the devils have a string of non-playoff years just so i can continue following them as intently as i do now and feel superior to fair-weather fans such as yourself
ruben, carrie underwood will no longer be going to sens games. you must be heartbroken
everytime it hurts, it hurts just like the first (and then you cry till there's no more tears)
