Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. 2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party

12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

As Socrates said I know only one thing and that is that I know nothing. You would do well to heed those words Paul. I live by them. So should scientists who are supposed to keep an open mind. Have you never read the Greeks in your scientific education? Megalomania is a terrible disease and scientists tend to be some of the worst sufferers. You still prefer personal attacks to talking about the actual science I see. One of the hallmarks of group think and lack of original thought is the mocking and putting down of others who do not agree with your group; in order to curry favour with what you perceive as the authority figures of your group.
Here's a little example, spot what is wrong with the following sentence fragment... (it's a fragment to make it easier for you)

There are some of us who have been labeled "deniers" by Mr. Beckwith, but who are not necessarily standing against this argument (which I must say, Bob, you very eloquently summarized).
Instead of denying it, what we (I) have been asking is: what are the solutions that can prevent this, and would the human cost of those solutions outweigh the cost of allowing global climate change to simply run its course?
Because in either case, we are talking about the die-off of 90% + of humanity. That is the crux of the situation.

Hi Paul,
It was pointed out to me some time ago in conversation with friends that the term “climate change denier” was being used far too liberally against people who would be better described as “climate change skeptics”. A “denier” being a derogatory term reserved for somebody, who knows something is true, yet denies it anyway (perhaps for personal gain). Whereas; a “skeptic” is someone who is simply not convinced of the validity of the science. Fair enough, I stopped using the term denier months ago.
The sooner we begin to take decisive action to combat climate change, the lesser will be the impact. I do believe your dire prediction of a 90%+ die off of the human race is way too pessimistic, but we need to change our ways in order to prevent a catastrophic outcome.
What to do, what to do? One idea that is gaining acceptance is a Carbon Tax.

Sorry, but I think climate change is changing our weather forever. Records for all types of " weather " are being broken year after year - extremes are becoming the norm. Hard not to search for a common cause - and I don't think it is the devil!

The thing is and I don't want to put too fine a point on this or be unscientific about it at all of course. But you do realize that Greece is (how to put this delicately) a friggin hot, hot country and has been for centuries? They grow citrus fruit in the streets of Athens! There is air conditioning everywhere in every apartment on the balcony and the Greeks have either wooden outside shutters or canvas awnings on their balconies that entirely block the sun out, they go from the top of the balcony to the railing, or more likely both. They sell 1.5l bottles of water everywhere for the low price of 1 euro as a public service. They grow olives everywhere. Do you know who else grows these things. Why yes the middle east. And yes the middle east is a friggin hot area too... The Greeks did not invent the toga just because they liked to party...
I hope I did not offend anyone with my indelicacey. I urge you to come to Greece asap to find out for yourself... The Acropolis is a minimum 20 minute walk up and they no doubt closed it to spare any issues with the pasty white tourist types that often climb up at the hottest time of day - mad dogs and Englishmen...

The science is sound according to scientists. 98% of them. Surely you know this, if not then you know absolutely nothing on the issue and should stick to posting about chess.
Ever hear of a little thing called group think. You are a prime candidate for that. You think whatever the group thinks since you are not capable or courageous enough to have any independent thoughts. Scientists have also often fallen into this trap. The road of science is littered with theories that 98% of scientists agreed were completely correct. Remember the killer bees that were going to get us all, remember the SARS epidemic? Remember a whole bunch of theories. Heck remember Y2K and the disaster that was supposed to be that never materialized?
It's often the courageous 2% that are found after many years to have been right all along. Not that the 98% don't make them suffer in the meantime.
Can you also explain how a degree in ceramic engineering makes you a physicist? And since getting your degree in 1987 how many years exactly have you worked in a technical field. Meaning not being in sales and such?
At best you are what Sheldon Cooper would call an 'oompa-loompa of science'. Excuse me if I don't have complete faith in engineers. The infamous blue pages of the the APEO journal make complete faith in engineers hard to maintain. As does the engineers who certified the mall in Elliot Lake shortly before it collapsed. Get off the scientists are perfect poppycock and get back to what the science actually says.
And exactly when have I denied climate change? I simply dont think it is as certain as you make it out to be. You may have drank the cool aid but for me the jury is still out.

Over the course of my lifetime we have gone from dying off due to global cooling to dying off as a result of global warming and now that they haven't been able to generate sufficiently unambiguous data that doesn't disappear into a shredder, when the questions backed by FOIA get too uncomfortable, we will be dying off due to climate change. All the while the population keeps rising and the people pushing the doomsday scenarios keep flying their private jets around while telling us that we have to make sacrifices which curiously involve giving their schemes and boondoggles and "investments" billions of taxpayers money without changing one bit of the behaviour that they claim to be concerned with. Its all about the money and nothing else. The scare tactics are just ways to persuade the easily deluded to fork over their money so that the chicken littles of the world can make piles of it while shoveling the same manure at us decade after decade.
Nice try Gary. Those changes from the Japan quake were tiny, eeny weeny, negligible. You like picking nits out of a herd of wooly mammoths.
That pretty much describes the increase in temperatures we're supposed to believe is causing alleged climate change.
Also, while Bob wasn't aware of the changed to the earth's axis and rotation, now we have progressed to your trying to defend the degree of the change. Nothing to back up your contentions, but there it is.

Bob A, there is no point putting any weight to Vlad's ramblings. He has no technical or scientific credentials. Ask him about his science background, I think it dates back to primary school and picture books of polar bears. More currently, his science is from Fox News and the Simpsons, not sources that he wants to quote.
Look at the website skeptical science and read about ice age/non ice age cycles and how they are on long timescales and relate to the changes in the earth orbit, tilt, and movement of tilt axis relative to the sun.
