General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
If you want to find the cause take a look in the sky at that thing called the sun, you know, the heat source for the solar system. The Martians and Venusians are enjoying a heatwave as well though their politicians are trying to claim its our emissions of greenhouse gases that is causing it which is just as silly as as what is coming out of the mouths of those with a vested interest in selling us carbon credits. On Earth we continue to come out of the last ice age.
Never mind. Post deleted.

Seems to me the answer has to lie in what is between us and the sun - the atmosphere. As I understand it that is what climate change scientists claim humans are altering with pollution, to our species detriment.
Bob, that is it in a nutshell. We are changing the chemical makeup of our atmosphere which in turn is slowing the natural escape of heat into space, so we get a greenhouse effect.
The science is sound, the evidence is compelling, climate change has now begun, as it was predicted, and it will get worse.
Some will remain skeptical for now. But that is all just noise.

There are some of us who have been labeled "deniers" by Mr. Beckwith, but who are not necessarily standing against this argument (which I must say, Bob, you very eloquently summarized).
Instead of denying it, what we (I) have been asking is: what are the solutions that can prevent this, and would the human cost of those solutions outweigh the cost of allowing global climate change to simply run its course?
Because in either case, we are talking about the die-off of 90% + of humanity. That is the crux of the situation.
What is your feeling on this, Bob?
Only the rushing is heard...
Onward flies the bird.

The science is sound according to whom? You are not personally qualifed to make a pronouncement like that. At best you can say that you believe the science is sound although you don't actually understand it beyond a basic lay person's level. If you have in fact looked into it even at that level and not just reporting hear say evidence. How much have you actually done to research this besides Youtube videos?
I've seen programs and scientists report that the world was doomed due to killer bees, an AIDS pandemic, SARS etc. Somehow we have managed to easily survive all those threats. I don't take science at face value.

Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
" Another blast of furnace-like heat is set to envelop the Greater Toronto Area on Tuesday — with the high expected to reach a blistering 37 C. "
This " climbing out of the ice age " business is not nice - since we're causing this going forward, can we reverse it back to bring back that stellar ice age??
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
You are right Bob A. Climate change is changing our climate. Basically it is forever on the scale of human lifetimes. Withing a decade Canada will enjoy a tropical rainforest like climate. No snow in winter, humid and tropical year-round with seasonal effects more or less swamped out by greenhouse gases. No ice on the Arctic Ocean and rapid sea level rise from incredible massacre of Greenland Ice sheet. Food shortages and chaos around the planet. Well under way already.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Vlad is completely delusional, a rapid climate change denier. Sick really, his views are putting a lot of people around the world in peril. Complete and utter nonsense continues to spew forth from his shriveled brain. Not in complete harmony with reality. Getting more and more ridiculous as the climate change becomes more and more obvious. At least it humors us on Chesstalk and provides for an interesting read.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Bob, I am a physicist, an engineer, and a budding climatologist and you are absolutely correct about the sun. Vlad is shooting blanks out of his nether region by speaking in rapid emotional terms and ignoring all the science, he has NO scientific background and likely has never read a decent book on the subject. Have a look at the web site (google Skeptical Science); there are many links that explain everything you want.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Come on Bob G., do not hold back. Amazing how an otherwise perfectly normal person like Vlad can become a raving lunatic regarding climate change is a fascinating study in the weaknesses of the human psyche.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Mr Bonham, to avoid a rapid transition this decade to a much warmer climate (and unrecognizable our existing one) we have a shot, a good shot. We need to apply regional geoengineering to the Arctic region to keep the sea ice intact. There are many good ways to do this, I highly recommend that you and everyone else on this site have a good look at the group that I work with called AMEG (Arctic Methane Emergency Group) and see our ideas on geoengineering.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Mr Kitich would easily fit into the Harper regime of climate denialists. Join the delusional cabal of climate denying people that are not in command of their faculties and logic.
The science is sound according to scientists. 98% of them. Surely you know this, if not then you know absolutely nothing on the issue and should stick to posting about chess.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Bob A, there is no point putting any weight to Vlad's ramblings. He has no technical or scientific credentials. Ask him about his science background, I think it dates back to primary school and picture books of polar bears. More currently, his science is from Fox News and the Simpsons, not sources that he wants to quote.
Look at the website skeptical science and read about ice age/non ice age cycles and how they are on long timescales and relate to the changes in the earth orbit, tilt, and movement of tilt axis relative to the sun.
