General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
The old one an only has become so long my computer doesn't want to load it properly and I haven't read it recently.
You might recall I said the disaster in Japan wouldn't put a stop to nuclear power or the increase in reactors. The following will give you an idea of what is happening NOW to ensure supplies for the present and future reactors.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
I hadn't read the old thread in quite a while, not since it was around 400 or so posts.
Obviously the disaster in Japan has shown the need for some kind of international rapid-response team to deal with nuclear disasters. They could be fitted with whatever machinery and equipment might be needed - for example, perhaps some portable water pumps to help temporarily cool a storage pool while the main pumps are worked on?
I found it rather interesting, on a different topic, that I've been saying for a few years that the only question in my mind is not WILL there be another "big" war, but will the next big war be over oil or food/water?
I just saw the other day that there is a big conference coming up soon where they will be discussing the looming possibility of a war over fresh water.
Interesting website on U.S. power generation. Coal seems to be the largest component of the energy puzzle there.
Also from the site:
"The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that although temperatures in the contiguous United States as a whole were near normal in December, geographical disparities led to heating degree day totals that were 9.9 percent above the average for December, and 2.4 percent higher than they were in December 2009."
What I read from that is that consumers either perceived that it was colder than it was or NOAA's temperature data is incorrect.

So far it looks like oil is winning as a war factor.
Where do you think that wars over water are likely?

Interesting website. I think that we are being painted into a corner by Ontario government policy which will require a big investment in nuclear power. I wonder what the backlash would be if they decided to fire up some of the mothballed coal plants again.

How about the disaster in Japan showing the need for a complete rethink as to how much stock we put in science? "Ahhh, so sorry... We not think about tsunami submerging diesel backup generators....lined up along ocean coast...in Ring of Fire earthquake zone.... We not think of it.... We just scientists...."
Only the rushing is heard...
Onward flies the bird.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
"Greenpeace co-founder Patrick Moore abandoned the stunt monkeys years ago in disgust, saying while they started off as sincere environmentalists with a valid cause, they have, over the years, become increasingly “anti-human” in their views."
“World communism failed, the wall came down (in 1989) and a lot of peaceniks and political activists moved into the environmental movement, bringing their neo-Marxism with them, and learned to use green language in a very clever way to cloak agendas that actually have more to do with anti-capitalism and anti-globalization than … ecology or science.”

Usec is a public company which trades on New York. You get neat swings on price. I suppose it's because it's heavily shorted. They fuel roughly about half the light water reactors in the U.S. and about a quarter in the world.
For various reasons, that's an important deal which was announced. The megatons to megawatts program where warheads were being changed to reactor fuel is ending in a year or two and this deal will help meet reactor demand. Now the uranium will come from mining.
It wouldn't surprise me if Ontario went to a light water reactor at a lower price rather than a Candu. I guess we'll likely find out after the Ontario election.
Coal plants are still in use in Alberta. They run on thermal coal. Sherritt is a big producer of Thermal coal. Probably natural gas would be preferable to coal for power generation. It burns cleaner.
Did they mothball those coal plants or level them to the ground?

Libya exported around 1.6 million barrels a day of light sweet crude before this started. That's the kind that refines easy. I was reading it will be at least a year to 18 months to get it back up after this conflict ends. Likely the nations importing it will have to take heavier oil from elsewhere and maybe their refineries can handle that.

Well Japan is a bit of a special case, in that there really isn't a safe place in the country from natural disasters.
In general though, nobody cares about "potential" natural disasters. The best example of this is Naples. Not only do 2.2 million people live within the 15-minute kill zone of Vesuvius, but their best evacuation plans assume 3-4 weeks notice of an eruption.
That's why some people are starting to call them "Natural Hazards" and "Human Disasters" - it only becomes a disaster because humans do dumb things, effectively.

The thing with oil is that, in general, the countries who have it are pretty weak. The notable exception being Russia. So as a result, you can have relatively little or one-sided wars, such as Iraq (and you could argue Libya) but the only real chance of a major war would be involving Russia.
The other funny thing with oil is that you need it to actually fight the wars - lots of it, in fact.
As for water... I think we'll start seeing some fights breaking out small-scale at first. Lake Chad seems a likely flashpoint, and the situation with the Nile could flare up again now that Sudan is splitting in half. The differences of water vs oil is that you need fresh water to live, and also it is the poorer countries who need it.
What would happen if a large number of third-world countries decided they needed access to more fresh water? These are countries who at this point would be desperate, and have nothing to lose by fighting. Initial fights could be amongst themselves, but in the long run...
It will be interesting to see in the long run what happens with Canadian oil though, once USA and China start needing to fight over it. Of course USA is closer and stronger so it's not likely China would be able to maintain access, but that could have repercussions elsewhere in the world where China has more influence.

I didn't want it to be kinder and gentler. It's already too mushy. :) The large one wasn't loading properly on my computer. I was getting scripting errors, whatever they are, so I stopped clicking on that thread.

Gary can't figure out how to use his computer or the forum and so rather than learn to do either he acts solely in his own imagined self interest.
Typical of the change deniers who care only about their interests, and short term ones at that.
