Sounds like it will save us around $60 million a year, probably plus benefits.

Any idea what will happen with the jobs at Atomic Energy now it's been sold?

Egidijus, as bad as I think these cuts at Environment Canada are they have absolutely no bearing on my move into climate change.

I study climate change simply because my view is that it is the most important issue facing humans for our survival and we must understand the systems better. I simply do not see any point in being in any other career. After years of informal study and interest in the subject I decided that the Ph. D. option was my best choice. Harper may go ahead and fire every single climatologist and meteorologist in the Canadian government; for each one he fires I will increase my efforts in study of the subject (and my communication of the science to others) simply because I believe that it is the right thing to do. Perhaps all those new prisons are being built to house these fired climatologists, if so then lock me up also. Join Facebook and twitter and friend/follow me and you can get your fill of recent advances in the science, there are too many to post on this site which gets a smattering of highlights.

I can truly say as far as career goes that I have been happier in my last 1.5 years of study that I have been throughout the rest of my entire career in many different fields. I think that this comes through in the passion of my posts, and distaste for obfuscation. If there are no jobs when I finish then I will start a company myself or enter the political sphere. However I expect that the rapidity of changes in the climate that are occurring today will be recognized by the general public and politicians and everyone else and climatologists will be in great demand in the near future. With the other scenario of the death of science and surge of ideology and lust for short term profit then I think that humanity is finished...

Here is a video looking at both the science of recent climate change events and the views of the deniers is also given. Watch closely, I think that I saw Vlad and Gary in the video...

While I don't care about any "rating points", I do wish to remind everyone before posting this next link about my idea several months ago for floating ocean islands of tropical rainforests to at least minimize the CO2 issue.

Now, here's a perversion of my idea:

At least this shows my idea has technical merit (Beckwith loses 250 rating points for dismissing it).... but Libertarian islands? Where the ultra-rich can free themselves from the shackles of civilization and engage in... what? Some bloggers have suggested pedophelia and other morally reprehensible activities.

Well, not all the ultra-rich are bad. Warren Buffet has thrown a wrench into the Republican machinery and suggested tax increases on his kind are the way to go.

Ontario is proof throwing money at problems is not a solution. In spite of increased hydro costs and HST on the hydro bills, they can't keep the lights on. Just two days ago there was a power failure which lasted approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. Not only were houses without electricity, the traffic lights weren't working either.

Gary, I think that you are kidding yourself about hydro costs, what makes you think that they will not go up no matter who is in charge? The government has subsidized the cost for years and is reducing the subsidity to retool the aging system. Retooling with renewables is much better than with coal or other things. If you want a lower electricity bill than monitor your useage and make your house much more energy efficient...

Mr. Bonham; I did not dismiss the idea of rainforests on floating rafts, I recall that I suggested the rainforests be put on the land where they can grow naturally.

The Liberals and McGuinty are a known quantity. We know how he raises our electricity costs and pays too much for electrical sources which are not viable without government subsidy.

The Conservatives have already promised to drop the HST on electricity and home heating. That means lower electricity prices. So the decison is easy. On the one hand there is HST on electricity and home heating bills. On the other hand there is no HST on electricity and home heating bills. The decision is a no brainer.

By the way, anyone living in an apartment building also likely pays through higher rents due to the pass through of the costs.

I think the liberals will be hard pressed to win more than 25 ridings in the Ontario election. Somerwhere between 12 and 25 will likely be the final tally.

Warren Buffet while somewhat fiscally conservative in the way he runs his business has never been socially conservative so it is not really much of a wrench. The only thing Buffett has suggested is that billionaires like him (and there aren't many like him) can pay higher taxes.

Gary always seems to forget how huge government subsidies go into the fossil fuel industry. Renewables have enormous potential to provide all the energy we need, and more. Their prices are dropping very quickly as will the subsidies when they reach a critical mass of production cost.

Vlad, Warren Buffet called all of the GOP candidates "pathetic" just today. He has lots to say about them and their policies. Are you still enamoured with the Tea Party, it seems that they want to just destroy the country.

On another note, a person gets paid extremely well to be a climate denier, explaining why there are so many of them.

With the fossil fuel industry, oil and gas, coal, the government gets a large net benefit from foreigners. They might have to give some funding rebates to get the projects developed but then the profit is large. You see, they sell it at the world prices, actually WTIC which is about 10 dollars less than Brent Crude the last time I looked, even though Canada is not a member of OPEC. We ship the U.S. around 2,000,000 barrels a day. Without those incentives to drill which you mentioned, and the very large amount of tax money the federal and provincial government get from the taxes, social programs would be a thing of the past. We basically send the U.S. all our oil and they send us most of their money. We do need to have the oil to ship. Also natural gas.

After the job McGuinty has done in the last two terms, it may be a generation or more before you see another Liberal government in Ontario.

I wouldn't want to be a scientist looking for a job with the federal or Ontario governments. From what I'm reading, companies are preparing for the possible end to the feed in tarrifs with a change of government in Ontario.

I think that world prices are over $20 less than Brent Crude, meaning that if Canada sold to someone other than the U.S. they could make that much more. The problem with this whole scheme is that the wealth is not distributed evenly, oil companies get filthy rich and the rest of the country gets extremely poor. This has happened time and time again in countries with a petrodollar currency. The currency goes so high it decimates manufacturing and other industries and weakens the tax base of the country making the net government revenues less. If you were correct about the bonanza for government then why is the debt so high.

I think that McGuinty has done a stellar job with a bad set of cards and has a great shot of forming the next government. We can just agree to disagree on this...

Do you not think that scientists are vital for advancement of societies. In this case is it not very shortsighted policy for federal and Ontario governments to be chopping them?
