General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Why is it that in the U.S. green energy companies can profitably sign deals to produce electricity for 11 cents per kilowatt hour and our green energy companies are whining about subsidized rates of 60 cents per kilowatt hour.
BTW we have lost key decisions in the trade arena on Ontario's green energy program. For some reason the Harper government is running interference for the McGuinty government but the writing is on the wall. Its over folks.

I thought it is because Ontario is insisting on expensive materials manufactured in Ontario while the U.S. was inundated with imported low cost materials.
I read somewhere the U.S. is thinking of, or has, imposed tariffs on imports they claim are subsidized by their government and are detrimental to U.S. companies.

There have always been anti-dumping tarrifs. That was the Canada US softwood lumber dispute. You have to take them to the WTO to prove that you are not subsidizing but that is a long process.
and probably you read this http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfou...ouncement.html
"despite a projected 24-per-cent increase in capital costs in just two years."
They will wait another 2 years and add 25% again :D and so on.
Here's a little more I found on the Nfld Muskrat falls project.

I am not on its risk-assessment team :p
Though for a normal operation it should be safe in terms that it should not make a big bang. However, if all union members would stop their work what would be consequences for the plant? (and of course, it was not stopped completely)
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
There have been at least a dozen or more articles written since my Sierra Club blog that was published on Monday, the day of the storm, that deal with the Sandy/climate change linkages. Unfortunately for the planet and the deniers, they all support my arguments.

"We’ve been shortsighted. We’ve marginalized those who warned us. We’ve treated environmentalism as an irksome fad. We’ve given cadence to nontroversies and called it balance. We’ve spent trillions to protect ourselves against terrorists and done nothing to keep our biggest cities above water in a storm." http://www.alternet.org/real-terror-...911?paging=off
Re: THE NEW One and Only Climate Change Whatever...
Paul, you wrote that this storm veered left unlike all other hurricanes before.
I grant this is not typical, but I question you is it truly unprecedented?
Have you indeed reviewed the tracks of all previous storms, or at least the short list of previous disaster hurricanes that hit New York?

I don't take the Sierra Club seriously.
It was a storm named for Halloween. In 1954 Toronto got Hurricane Hazel which did more damage than this one in this area. It was around this time of the year.
Is there anyone who does anymore? They seem to be beholden to anyone who will give them money. See the links between them and the Ambassador Bridge Company.

If we get a cold spell then its weather. If we get a natural disaster then its climate change. The question is, are they being intentionally dishonest or are they just stupid and don't understand that weather is not climate?

For this area that Frankenstorm wasn't as bad as forecast on the TV weather channel. The wind didn't amount to very much and the rain didn't either. Probably it was worse in other areas but not here.
In New York they cancelled the Knicks basketball game with the Nets last night. The NBA policy is, as far as I understand it, that if both teams can reach the stadium and 3 referees, the game will be played regardless of how few, if any, fans arrive. In this case the game was supposed to be broadcast nationally and they didn't want to do it with an empty stadium so they postponed the game.
The problem with all the climate doomsters is they think they have suddenly discovered weather changes. A bird poops on their window and they think it's a sh*tstorm. :)

Compare the path of Hazel (1954) and Sandy (2012)
Was there precedent? Maybe. Look how dense they go in a period 1851 and 2005
Egidijus, thanks for the images. The paths are quite similar initially but as you move into the mid latitudes the storms ALWAYS move right due to two effects, namely the coriollis force deflecting objects to the right and the prevailing winds from west to east. Down closer to the equator there is some jogging that can occur if the prevailing winds there (from east to west) are strong enough to overcome the coriollis. It is the hard left in the midlatitudes seen by Sandy that has never happened before. Without climate change destroying the sea ice and contorting the jet streams with enormous amplitude Sandy would have veered right in the mid latitudes like every other hurricane in recorded history.
