General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Fred is correct in his assessment that I am willing to participate positively in my role as Past President. I just need somebody else to sit in the big chair. :D
... It's interesting to note that Serge's platform is on the CFC Forum, and has not received any negative comments there. ...
Which doesn't necessarily mean support for Serge. With a few exceptions (e.g. you, Ken Craft, Bob G., etc.), a lot of governors seem to be wary of taking the plunge into the talk boards.

It is discouraging indeed to see that the actual membership number declined,
Do you have names who did not renew their membership? Have they been contacted?
2010 - 975 (regular)
2011 - 956
Total - -19
However, there were gains in Life (+4), Family (+21), and Honorary (+1).
I still do not completely understand Junior and Participating Junior switch. (I think Participating Junior have both adult and juniors tournament fees)
Do you have numbers for collected adult single tournaments fees.

With good reason. Most of the people who I talk to seem to think that the negative energy makes it not worth getting involved in. They have their opinions but they don't want to have to suffer the consequences of those opinions which is fine. It is probably a wise choice built around the observation that when you argue with a fool, there are two fools arguing.
Quite perturbing. As a member of the CFC, I feel as though my voice needs to be heard. And yet... it is not. :-/
This is the way the system works:
At the BCCF Annual Meeting between rounds of the Keres, the BC Governors to the CFC were elected. Maybe you even sacrificed a meal, attended, and voted for a Governor. You can approach any of those Governors and express your preference for CFC Presidential voting. It is true that the Governor is not bound by your advice. Once you've elected him (or her), she is a free agent, not beholden to anybody. But, personally, using my years as a CFC Governor as a guide, I'd have to say that a governor who was approached by a member with a cogent argument to vote for a particular candidate would be so shocked (by this level of interest) that she will probably vote for that candidate. The well-organized minority, the squeaky wheel... Thus multiplying your influence, your voice, by 50.

Your experience probably tells you if Lucas was there or not. (no). We did make quorum this time though without having to press gang people like last year. Although "election" of governors is a strong word considering the exercise mostly consists of twisting people's arms to stand.

Well, you do realize there would be more than 19 adult members who did not renew. Some of the 956 adult members may have been juniors last year, or adults renewing after an absence of several years, or someone new just taking up chess for the first time. Renewable notices are sent out monthly for those member due for renewal.
I am very interested in the stats surrounding our membership retention rates, why do members renew or don't renew. This is a big project to undertake, and there is always something more urgent to attend to. Nevertheless, if someone is willing to assist with this project, send me an email. :D
In terms of per capita equality you should probably make adjustments for:
a) the FQE. Assuming you were working on Canada's total pop, this adjusts the number to something like 6000.
b) juniors. I don't know what the uscf policy on this is but if their junior tournaments typically require membership versus the cfc policy of not requiring membership, this would account for much of the rest of the discrepancy.
Canada's official population is about 11% of that of the U.S. so lets call it 6,600 CFC members with the FQE adjustment and 8,800 without. My impression of the U.S. is that the greater numbers are largely a phenomenon of more adults playing most likely because there are many more opportunities to play. There is some dropoff of the kids but many of them seem to return after they do their non-chess thing for a while.

As a Governor I once made up a questionnaire for ex-members that the old CFC office in Ottawa sent out, but, alas, the then ED never found the time to share the results with any of the governors, including myself, afaik.
Bob, if you can find a way to ensure that such work won't go to waste again, I can (at the least) help you formulate such a questionnaire, if it's feasible, useful and would help, in your opinion.

Lucas - don't be fooled by all the negative rhetoric on chesstalk. The executive and governors welcome input from members. If you plan to play in the Canadian Open next month, that would be a perfect opportunity for you to attend our annual general meeting (AGM). It is open to members to attend. You are most welcome. If you can't attend, take Jonathan's advice, and speak with one of your 5 BC governors.

Thanks Kevin. Let's put this project on our agenda to start in August. :)

You want to retain members? I highly recommend doing what the USCF does with its rating page. They have a norm system for players. You achieve I think 5 norms and you earn the class title. It gives people something to shoot for. I have a bunch of US students whom I teach online. Some of them are adults. Pretty much every one of them - including the adults - are psyched to make norms and get the class titles.
