General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Click on Public Forums and you will find the forum CFC ' News ' ( In the past, Larry has asked posters not to post links to articles in the CFC forums. I don't know if this is still in effect, so I won't ). It is posted there.

OK, I think I found it, but I guess I cannot reply to it. It was a good idea for a post.
In the future, when posting anything about FIDE events, please feel free to refer to the Ottawa weekenders. As long as I'm doing them, at least the top section will always be rated FIDE. Feel free to also include our weblink for all EOCA tournaments, this season : http://www.eoca.org/htm/tournaments_2011-12.html
Without the financial support of the amateur chess player, there would be no organized chess in Canada. That is the reality we all need to acknowledge.
So, why we have so many governors and executives, if only amateur chess players are major financial supports here? The only thing we can acknowledge here, is that it is time to clean the closet here of old junk and re-organize the mess!

So managed to find major problem here, but question remains what are you prepared to do about it.
Nothing was done to eliminate this permanent problem here. It seems that re-form failed in last 2 years to fix this mess?
Every amateur player who pays his membership dues and entry fees helps to grow the chess community. They are all precious, every one.
It seems to us, that you are only interested in $$$. Membership and entry fees are NOT the only wait to grow the chess community. I guess you will keep failing with this approach over and over again. Just look at how FIDE, Russian Federation and other well organizations operate. :D . If you have a free minute and do some research you will realize it is not just memberships and entry fees, that drives successful organizations. Looks like this organization is taken to dark ages. That is a sad reality.
It is not about the money, it is about the growth and health of the chess community.
First, you say that membership and entry fees help drive chess community. Right after, you say that it is not about the money. It is obvious that you are contradicting yourself and everyone here. Now we know why chess in Canada is where it is.
Hi Jean:
We'll just have to agree to disagree. I think we both have the same length of experience, though mine is " class " and yours " elite ".
Yes, that you guys probably have same length of experice in time that is. I am just not clear about the class here. When you say class, do you refer to class 'C' here. Since I do not think we talking about class 'A' or class 'B' here. :)
And there have been others, and others coming up. Maybe the organizers might post the details here for players interested in FIDE – rated tournaments. And also the details of any past, recent FIDE-rated tournaments in order to put the record straight on this.]
Sorry Bob, but clicking on your link just caused my computer
to lose its internet connection, and just stay down, without even
showing the page.
The actual cause may have been a virus or Rogers going down.
I am still curious. What is the video about?
It is just a very short clip from a Rodney Dangerfield movie, the name eludes me. Anyway, Rodney goes back to college to be closer to his son. In the clip he is hitting on a college professor. When he asks her for a date, she replies "sorry, I have a class". He tries several days, but she repeats "sorry, I have a class". He finally replies "call me, when you have no class".
The exchange between Bob and Jean reminded me of it, and I just wanted to share the laugh with yu'all.

I had not choice but to read your clip description, since I am afraid of opening up a link on my computer screen. I take it Rodney is you and college professor is Jean.
Are you implying, that you are consistently trying to hit on Jean now? … and I thought chesstalk could not sink any lower. ;)
I really hope this is not some kind of a virus that you guys cooked up lol. I do not thing anyone will want to be laughing with you after seeing their computer getting crushed!
You fail to grasp that a high rated player dropping out of chess is a big loss for the community, especially if he writes, teaches and shares his knowledge and experience in many ways. All that is lost for further generations of players, especially the young and up and coming ones.
That was certainly true up until the Kasparov era, say.
But human mentors are less needed now, don't you think? Kids today
are just sparring with their engines, practicing on software like
Chess Hero, memorizing huge numbers of opening lines and master games,
and winning tournaments with much less experience than in the past.
(And judging from the recent 60 Minutes piece on him, despite claims of
some natural gift, I think that #1 Carlsen is another example of that.)
I still agree with tournament prizes favouring the open section however.
Tournaments should always reward excellence.

Not seeing the video, I don't get the joke either.
Or Bob Armstrong (not Guillanders) in the Dangerfield role either.
But the virus may've been caused by hijacking the posted link
(which connected me to an infected website), not necessarily
something posted on Youtube or Chesstalk.

The link is fine. Do you get redirects if you search Google for antiviruses?
