There are 96 entries for the CYCC. How many from Quebec? Three.

As of a few days ago, there were 59 entries for the Quebec Open (entry fees don't increase until July 1). At least 29 of these entries are from outside Quebec. Are the $65-$100 entry fees a factor (compared to the $225-$250 (CYCC entry fees) or the $225-$275 (Canadian Open entry fees))?
Nearly all of the players from outside Quebec are for the invitational section, so I think it's more because the incredible opportunity for norms. The low entry fees are certainly a huge incentive for local player (for juniors it starts at $45), but it's hard to say if it really attracts many players from Ontario (since they still have to pay the hotel, which is much more than $200 for the week).

Regarding the low number of Quebec players for the CYCC or CO, there's no doubt it's a matter of cost (although for the CO, the hotel is the most expensive part). Like many others, I've always wanted to play in the CO, but have never been able to take vacations. It's pretty hard for many people to take 8 days of vacations to play in another province.

Still, there should be much more participants in the next few weeks. I know a couple of parents that have not yet registered their kids to the CYCC. I think we should get close to 30 players for the NAYCC (even though it's further), so I'd expect the CYCC to do pretty well also, even with the high entry fees (it's still a national championship!).

There's a lot of money in chess. Probably always was. I remember in the mid 70's a guy writing and telling me he could afford the stamps for postal but couldn't afford the membership fee, which was only around 3 dollars. I tossed in the money for him, and sent him all the membership stuff. He then sent an order for around $100.00 (which was a lot of money back then) for books and supplies. I've had more than 3 dollars of fun telling that story.

A list of registered players will be added in early 2013.

There will be a new page added each week as we announce the titled players who are coming.

        Added:
since Google isn't indexing the site, but does index ChessTalk, I'm adding a few keywords here to help people find it via Google:
        2013 Canadian Open Chess Championship
        2013 Canadian Youth Chess Championship
        2013 CYCC

Yeah, really. It's a sites.google.com site that Google doesn't index!

Christine Gao has paid ,why isn`t her name on the registered list ?

        Thank you!

Because she paid by cheque, and I was told about that a few hours after I most recently updated the list.
She'll be on the next update (Monday or Tuesday).

There are 15 of us from BC pre-registered in the Canadian Open. Myself and 14 kids.

so many entries have come in over the past two hours (not to mention the weekend, when I was away from my computer... thank God!) that there are almost certainly many more than 15 by now.

When the entries slow down to a trickle (tonight?) I will update both CYCC and CO registration lists.

Reminder: entry fees in both go up at the end of the week!

Hi John, on the registered players list, Lily Zhou should be in U12 Girls group, not U10, please correct that at your convenience.

                    Fixed.

Thanks for pointing it out, as it's easier to fix now than just before the event.

There's one other error on the CYCC registered players list that I know of... but I don't know the correct age group for that player, so I'm just going to leave it the way the registration form was filled out until a correct registration form is sent in.

Great! thanks John for the promptly fix. BTW, is there any new updates for the preregistered list?

thanks John, I see the list is updated now. more players registered, looks like this year's CYCC will be the one with the most participants.

Perhaps I didn't look hard enough, but I can't determine from the 2013 Canadian Open website whether clocks, boards and pieces are provided for the 2013 Canadian Open by the organizers. Can anyone tell me?

The last of my working (analog) clocks 'broke' some time ago. I may not be able to buy a (digital) clock in time for this weekend, but other participants may also wish to know whether clocks etc. are provided.

There is also a chance that a weaker player can come 1st if the top 2 rated players we'll have to face in the 6th round. Chess'Math has a special rule for their provincial finals to avoid this.
With 4 players tied for 1st in the U12b and U14b a 7th round is the best way to determine the Canadian representative to WYCC. Are the playoffs round-robin tournaments? What time control will be used?
Maybe a governor will introduce a motion to make CYCC a 7 rounds tournament from next year.

It seems we will have plenty of sets and clocks.
