Bernie is a communist who honeymooned in the Soviet Union and praised Castro and Hugo Chavez. If you think the results of that oppressive system would be different here from what it was every other time it was tried you are likely mistaken.

Trump's results are because of the actions that he took to roll back regulations.

Americans are not that smart. Trump's appeal is to people like himself- arrogant, narcissistic, dishonest, racist and stupid. There are enough Americans like this to get him re-elected. Canadians would not vote Trump in to be the dog catcher, or even a janitor.

She was born October 13,1989. She will be 35 a few weeks before the 2024 election.

Very well put, I agree with everything except perhaps the last sentence (because I come across so many Canadians who are admiring Trump).

I think America has turned a corner with Trump. More and more Americans are becoming proud of being racist, proud of being sexist, proud of being white supremacist, proud of being obnoxious, proud of being greedy. Anyone who looked at the list Peter provided here would think that Biden would be running far ahead of Trump now and that even the Senate was going to turn blue. But it is not the case and it is looking very possible for another 4 years of Trump.

I used to wonder after the Access Hollywood tape and Trump's admission of being a sexual predator .... how could any American woman support Trump? And then I realized ... it seems to me lots of American women actually WISH a man like Trump would come up to them and do what Trump admitted to doing. Lots of American women seem to me to admire that kind of "manly" behaviour. And that made me further realize that perhaps a majority of Americans in general admire all of the things on the list Peter provided. It's in their blood.

Bernie is not a Communist. Yes, he did take some trips to the Soviet Union, and yes he did praise Cuba for their health care system. He is a Democratic Socialist and advocates for social programs like universal health care, a minimum wage of $15 per hour, and more.

I suspect that most of the Canadians who prefer Trump do so due to his policies and not his personality. There is nothing wrong with fighting for better trade deals for your country, being careful with immigration and so forth. There is nothing wrong with leaning well to the right on the political spectrum. But to overlook this moron's faults and the horrendous damage he is doing because of this is in my view at least irresponsible and shortsighted.

                • Indiana is the 20th state to reach 100,000+ cases. Missouri is close behind. I've been watching Missouri closely (because of the St.Louis chess club) and it has more than doubled its cases in the last six weeks.

He isn't a communist, the only thing that he praised about Castro was his literacy program, and he disavowed Chavez while describing him as a dictator. Meanwhile, Trump literally said that he and Kim Jong Un "fell in love" and that he respects him; he said that Erdogan is a friend of his and that he's done a great job; he's repeatedly praised Putin, etc.

It's pretty weird to give so much credit to Trump for unemployment dropping by 1.2% over 3 years when it had already been steadily going down for the previous 7 years. The final two years of Obama's presidency saw an average growth of 210,000 new jobs per month, while the first two years of Trump's presidency saw an average growth of 201,000 per month: https://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2019/ar...es-in-2018.htm

Castro said he was a democratic socialist until he assumed power.

Lenin, Stalin, Mao Zedong and others used Marxism to obtain power and then tossed the book out the window once they did.

                        • An interesting article regarding the new "hygiene theater". In a nutshell, some research leans towards the greater risk with activities where people share air, vs. sharing contacts with surfaces.

                          https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/ar...heater/614599/

If this is true, I really don't know how we get indoor chess restarted anytime soon ...

I think medical thinking has shifted somewhat away from surface contact being a primary infection vector to looking more at droplets and aerosol transmission. Of course, initially it was interesting to argue about how long the virus could survive on various surfaces etc.

Here is another interesting read: https://www.theatlantic.com/health/a...winter/616204/

                            Final paragraph of the article:

The U.S. might stop treating the pandemic as the emergency that it is. Daily tragedy might become ambient noise. The desire for normality might render the unthinkable normal. Like poverty and racism, school shootings and police brutality, mass incarceration and sexual harassment, widespread extinctions and changing climate, COVID-19 might become yet another unacceptable thing that America comes to accept.
Actually, you can find many articles written by Ed Yong for the Atlantic... all of them are excellent in my opinion.
I know Trump thinks the Atlantic is a rag... I also know what his opinion is worth.
