General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Courts Against Positive Measures on Climate Change?
Americas - USA
"Within days, the conservative majority on the Supreme Court is expected to hand down a decision that could severely limit the federal government’s authority to reduce carbon dioxide from power plants — pollution that is dangerously heating the planet."
........................................................2022 Average......................................................................... 2022 Average
Activity jumped in the thread last week ....... there was over 1 response posted per day...... activity is proportionate to the number of responses posted.
It is also expected that the current weekly period stats will remain substantially behind the 2022 Average for a long time. There were many more posts per week in the beginning than now, as everyone had their say. So, as the number of viewers decreases, and then stabilizes, the yearly average comes down only very slowly, given the high initial activity.
There is lots of climate change information out there. I am shooting to post a new response every 2nd day, but am sometimes falling short on this, depending on the amount of time I have to be on-line. But I only run across a small percentage of the information available. I encourage other CT'ers to also post responses here, when they see climate change posts of interest elsewhere.
The Pressing Climate Change Issue
The core issue: Building a sense of urgency on this issue in society. We must realize that we cannot kick it down the road any longer.
The public is aware of the climate change issue.......
BUT..... climate activists must find strategies to “AWAKEN” the public to the “URGENCY”.
Nature's Tipping point is estimated to be, on current trajectory, only 9 years away (Around Jan. 1, 2031). Capping the temperature rise at only 1.5 degrees Celsius is now impossible (UN Climate Change Panel's most recent report). UNCCP noted that current government deadlines were totally insufficient to solve the problem. CO 2 must be capped by 2025! And for the first time, CO 2 “removal” has now become a necessary part of the solution, along with eliminating spewing of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere.
Our window of opportunity is fast closing.
The Large Picture Solutions
Can we come up with at least one or two viable suggestions of impressive, radical things that might wake up the public, that we could then put out there to other concerned client activists?

The Greenhouse Effect - Creating around Earth a non-porous atmospheric canopy
"Increased use of coal was the main factor driving up global energy-related CO2 emissions by over 2 billion tonnes, their largest ever annual rise in absolute terms
Global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions rose by 6% in 2021 to 36.3 billion tonnes, their highest ever level, as the world economy rebounded strongly from the Covid-19 crisis and relied heavily on coal to power that growth, according to new IEA analysis released today."
"It is only early July, but once again the heat has come in early. Already this year some nations in Europe and North Africa have seen the highest June temperatures on record. In the US, 100 million Americans were urged to “stay indoors” last month due to the extreme heat and 65 million are experiencing “severe to exceptional” drought; the nation’s two largest reservoirs, Lake Mead and Lake Powell, are at their lowest ever levels.
None of this feels normal. At the very least it is unsettling; for those experiencing the worst effects, it is harrowingly grim. Yet such heat is only becoming more predictable as climate change increases its grip. The past seven years have been the hottest since records began. In India and Pakistan, this year’s early extreme heat was made 30 times more likely because of humanity’s influence on the global climate, scientists agree."
"After Supreme Court Ruling, Cities ‘Left Holding the Bag’ on Climate Change.
The decision to curb federal authority on emissions puts even even more pressure on local governments, which have attempted to fill the gaps in climate policy."
Strategy: Shift to Green Energy (One being Electricity)
Issue: Electrical Energy Storage (Battery)
Americas - The Salton Sea, State of California, USA
"This toxic lake has enough lithium to supply US electric vehicles for decades.
The "brine" beneath this remote Californian lake could provide more lithium than any source on the planet, enough to power all domestic EV car batteries for decades to come. But will the "white gold" rush be all that it promises?"
.........................................................2022 Average...................................................................... 2022 Average
Last Week's........Prior Week's.....Views/Day.........Last Week's............Prior Week's.........Responses/Day.
Moderate activity continued apace in the thread last week ....... this was because response posting also continued at the same pace (On average, one response per day)..... activity is clearly proportionate to the number of responses posted over the course of the week. It would appear that this thread does have 25-30 regular CT'ers who check in whenever there is a new response.
Note: It is expected that the current weekly period stats will remain substantially behind the 2022 Average for a long time. There were many more posts per week in the beginning than now, as everyone had their say. So, as the number of viewers decreases, and then stabilizes, the yearly average comes down only very slowly, given the high initial activity.
Climate Change Responses
There are lots of climate change articles out there.
This thread encourages CT'ers to re-post responses here when they see climate change posts of interest elsewhere. Help bring other CT'ers right up-to-date.
I personally, as the thread originator, am shooting to post a new response at least every 2nd day, but am sometimes even falling short on this, depending on the amount of time I have to be on-line, which is limited.

"BOULDER CITY, Nev. (AP) — An abandoned old power boat juts upright from the cracked mud like a giant tombstone. Its epitaph might read: Here lay the waters of Lake Mead.
The largest U.S. reservoir has shrunken to a record low amid a punishing drought and the demands of 40 million people in seven states who are sucking the Colorado River dry. The megadrought in the U.S. West has been worsened by climate change. Wildfire season has become longer and blazes more intense, scorching temperatures have broken records and lakes are shriveling."
