    1. Oceans

    Heat

Hottest ocean temperatures in history recorded last year

Ocean heating driven by human-caused climate crisis, scientists say, in sixth consecutive year record has been broken

    2. Weather Extremes

    Heat

    The Americas - USA

Temperatures in the United States last year set more all-time heat and cold records than any other year since 1994, according to a New York Times analysis of Global Historical Climatology Network data.

The way I see it, we must solve the problems of poverty and greed, on a global scale. Whatever economic system you choose (Capitalism, Socialism, Libertarianism, Marxism, Communism, whatever-ism), if it does not solve these, it is doomed to failure. We all grew up being told Capitalism was great, better than all the rest, self-regulating, just trust us. We all know better now.

      My economic system would include:

A guaranteed Universal Basic Income for everyone.
Significant wealth taxation especially for those on top.
Free universal health care and education.

This must be accompanied by strong democratic principles and government regulations.

I know, still idealistic and vague, nothing specific yet.

Here a specific idea: How about structuring corporations such that every shareholder gets 1 vote. You have 1 share, 1 vote. You have a million shares, 1 vote. Bring democracy to the workplace.

Anyway, these are all structural changes to our economic and political systems, nothing specific to fighting climate change. I am getting there, but just wanted to lay a foundation first.

      • Hi Bob G:

Thanks.......it is a good start on building a solution.

Your idea of hitting poverty, and tweaking the capitalist system, seems sound, except for timing. Your starting campaign platform is:

A guaranteed Universal Basic Income for everyone.
Significant wealth taxation especially for those on top.
Free universal health care and education.

Very good......but what is your time-frame for achieving what you agree is only a start on tackling climate change? If the scientists who propose we have only 9 years to passing Nature's tipping point are right, how will this strategy ever meet the time-frame?

I believe that this, though good, and worth working on generally, is not going to avoid Climate Change Suicide. Something more radical has to be proposed for us to meet the time-frame......we have been frittering away our possible salvation for many years now, while our house is burning. We have been warned about the coming fire for many years by many scientists. What will move the electorate to immediate action?

Also, the corporate structure you have described (One vote per shareholder/member) exists, I believe, in some Not-for-Profit Corporations.

The Chess Federation of Canada is this. Cyclically, the members get to vote for the members of the Executive/Governors. But then the problem of representative government over direct government comes into play. I am not sure of this, but I think there is no process for recall of Executive/Governors by the membership. Nor is there any "censure" mechanism whereby the members vote on a motion of censure against a certain action of the Executive or Governors. Effectively, we have created a despotic committee which rules chess until the next election.

I am not sure there is much else we can do right now. Until the USA resolves its political mess, we are all being held hostage. I am watching The Walking Dead on Netflix, and if I offer an analogy. The fascists are in our face, we have to deal with that more immediate threat before grabbing the water bucket.

If we have to wait out the end of the 2nd American civil war, as Bob G indicates, before dealing with Climate Change.........

Can we all agree that we are already toast??

Not precisely what I meant. Continue efforts on climate change, protests, education, research etc.
But we need to deal with the more immediate threat, Fascism in the USA.

Again in reference to The Walking Dead, we need to avoid being bitten, whilst continuing the fight.

But it is MLK day in the USA, so let's hear from his daughter, Dr. Bernice King.

              • Seems there is agreement: Should the USA fall into Fascism (Trump II), then the odds on mankind globally beating the "Tipping Point" deadline drop dramatically, even for those who do not believe that the battle is already lost.

I am inspired. These guys have a plan.

                  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYbg...emocracyNow%21

It seems Democrats have no courage to push voter rights even on MLK day,
Crazy Conman Trump can bring down the Republicans by bullying them,
Coal Baron Manchin can stop the Democrats from doing anything,
so what would be accomplished by waiting for Americans to vote again?

Start the protests now, and every day, everywhere.

                    I agree.

Anyone got what they consider a more effective plan to get the world to a 25% acceptance that the global plan must be:

"Start Radical Climate Change Reforms NOW!"?

Analysis: We have now passed the ChessTalk initial momentum period of the first two weeks. Those interested have gotten involved.

The attempt to solve issues has now become more difficult as we hone in on the reality of achieving positive climate change before we pass the lethal Nature's "Tipping Point" - only about 9 years away!!

                          • Proposition: Our ability to make the necessary radical changes re climate change, so as to avoid passing the "Tipping Point" (Approx. Jan. 1, 2031 - only 9 years away) is TOTALLY dependent of the type of world economic/government systems we put in place.

Fact: We now have in place: Capitalism (USA, Russia, etc.), USSR-style Communism (China, North Korea, etc.), and a few with Democratic Socialism (Chile).

Question: Does anyone believe this global arrangement will fill the bill?? Will they, in concert, make the radical economic/societal reforms necessary to avoid climate change suicide?

                            Answer:

                            a. If the answer is YES........

explain how you expect this to unfold.

                            b. If the answer is NO......,

2nd Question: does this mean that some new party/economics (Like Democratic Marxism, as one example, or Naziism/Fascism ) must be elected across the globe in order for the people to get the reins of power, to then have their new government make the changes, immediately, on getting power through the ballot box?

                            • There will be no sudden mass collective enlightenment. There are too many of us, the problem is far too advanced, humans cannot agree on anything, we are essentially a "sick animal" to quote Nietzsche. We will use up our ecosystem until it destroys us, which destruction is already manifest in the pandemic, the weather, the volcanoes and so on. We need a miracle. As Martin Heidegger stated, "only a God can save us". In the meantime, love one another and have fun while you can. Those of us who are older have our memories to comfort us, but I feel for the young, for they will never have the chance to look back at a long life well lived.

Without going full Thanos, the problem is overpopulation, not capitalism. Everything he describes in his video is caused by there being too many people.
