I hope they can get a 3rd GM to play, so that GM norms would be possible. Otherwise, it is a great field.

The field organized by FIDE rating - https://cccc2026.com/players-by-rati...nt-par-la-cote

I don't think GM norms are possible , since it wouldn't satisfy the 3-federation rule ; only direct IM/WIM title/norm is possible, since the Zonal corresponds to Sub-Continental Individual.

Zonal and sub-zonal tournaments are exempt from the 2 other federations rule under B 1.4.3 c.
National championships are exempt from the 2 other federation rule in years where there is no zonal tournament under B 1.4.3 a

I see ; thank you for clarifying. I had been looking at the "Direct Titles" portion of the regulations.

OK, so that would indeed be great.if a 3rd GM can make it. There are so many IMs registered ; they would be thrilled to be able to score a GM norm!

GM and IM norms are possible as there is no foreign federations requirement for Closed and Zonal. For GM norm you need:

            1. 2600+ performance
            2. Average opponents rating at least 2380 (otherwise even 9/9 would not help)
            3. 3 GMs
            4. 5 title players (GM, IM, FM). CM is not a title player in this case.

Average opponent's rating of 2380 is a very tough requirement in this case, as we have many 2000- players. Organizers decided to reduce the rating floor to 2100 CFC (or 2000 FIDE), compare to 2200 CFC (2100 FIDE) in many previous National Championships.

Thank you for the detailed explanation , Victor.

Given the 2380 requirement, it sounds like it will take a few more GMs and some fortuitous pairing to make a GM norm happen.

Absolutely. Shiyam won Canadian Zonal 2 years ago with phenomenal result - 9/10, but his opponent's rating was below the needed average. Nikolay Noritsyn, indeed, was very closed to GM norm in 2019, and missed it by 0.5 points with 6.5/9.

2019 was a smaller event with significantly higher average rating. Bareev (2600+) was playing.

I vaguely recall someone mentioning that the location has a capacity of 200 (do correct me if I am wrong), so with 112 players so far, I think it's comfortable : the last Pere Noel tournament at the same location had 207 players, a little more.

The more immediate constraint is the last registration date : 31st March.

I see the regulations mention that pairings will be published only 1 hour before the rounds ; is this the standard compared to previous Zonals? It's rather surprising to me.

Afternoon rounds have short notice, by definition. But morning rounds too?

The 112 entries includes the Women's section. As of March 27, chess-results shows 78 players, plus 40 women - so space shouldn't be a problem.
