What makes the most sense to me is dual gasoline and natural gas vehicles. I drove one of those for a few years. Company vehicle. The range on the one I had was from the east end of Toronto to Peterborough and about a quarter of the way back. I'd feel a loss of power, flick a switch, and it would switch back to gasoline without even having to stop.

You have to burn a tank of gas every so often so it won't foul. They need for gasoline stations to install natural gas compressors so I would guess grants would be involved.

The vehicle didn't have as much pickup on natural gas as it did on gasoline but people who buy such things probably aren't interested in drag racing. The only place it's a bit of a problem is passing on a 2 lane highway. You kind of have to drop back a bit and build up some speed before you pass the car in front of you. I'd imagine electric cars would have similar problems with the auto not having "guts".

Really good article showing maps of the spill extent on each day and technologies that are in the works to try and stop the leak...

Gary, I will have to rent Pelican Brief since I have not seen it. Email your oil friend to pick his brain on solutions, etc...
Are the pipes normally 8 inches or 12 inches in diameter. What is the pressure of the well? It is thought to contain at least 10-14 million barrels of oil in total.

The Pelican Brief is pure fiction as far as I know. I find it entertaining. It's not like Julia Roberts Erin Brockovich movie about pollution.

I don't know the size of the pipe but it could be twice or more that size. If you know the size of he pipe and the pressure of the well you can probably calculate the volume that could be leaking. Well pressure drops off with time.

I'm sure they know the solution for getting it plugged. The factor is time.

Why is the oil at such high pressure to come gushing out under 5,000 feet of water (and apparently 18,000 feet below the sea floor)? Is it because of the weight of the land mass above the oil?

In that case, what happens when the oil drains out to where the pressure has come way down? Can the land mass sink down?

Probably pressure from rock formations but most likely the well has natural gas. This is just guessing because I don't know for sure.

I suppose when the pressure is gone the leak would slow down dramatically, but expect the well to be capped long before that. On land they test the oil well then normally put the well on a pump at a certain rate per day.

Pressure = density x depth x gravitational acceleration
Pressure is basically the force/area exerted at a point in space, the force is the mass x acceleration, the mass is the density x volume (volume = area x depth) above the spot.

              Thus, pressure is force/area = mass x acceleration/area = density x area x depth x acceleration/area = density x depth x acceleration (due to gravity).

Interestingly, gravity is strongest at the surface of the earth. As you go upwards it decreases, and also as you go into the earth it weakens (to zero at the center of the earth). Thus, in the bottom of a mine it is weaker than at the surface, since it is reduced by the mass of the earth above you pulling you upwards). If you drilled a hole right through the center of the earth and dropped an object into the hole it would pass right through the earth and end up with zero velocity at the level of the surface on the other side (assuming no friction). Beats flying, if you can take the 4500 degree heat at the earth center.

Here's an interesting article that gives an idea what often happens when you hit oil.

Natural gas is compressed so you can get more through the pipeline. See Boyle's law. It can be cooled to create liquid natural gas for transportation.

I am very surprised that nobody has disputed my pressure calculation above. After all gravity is only a theoretical concept (like climate change) and has not been proven beyond a doubt. Like climate change it is only a scientific theory. Scientists have conceptialized the idea of a graviton (fundamental particle of gravity) but no-one has proven it yet.

Well, everyone knows the reason oil comes gushing out of the wells with such force is due to the rotation of the earth... or perhaps the rotation of the universe around the earth causes the oil to be sucked out with great force? It must be one or the other.

I didn't want to get sidetracked away from mess in the gulf, so I stuck to the practicle rather than debate the theoretical. :)

I like that. What happens the 20% it doesn't work? Does it turn a little leak into a real big one.

Anyhow, I'm interested to see what happens with the hugh concrete condom they built and will try. It has a hole in the top and I guess they will have a pipe to try to divert the oil to a tanker on the surface.

Probably you know that more than 15,000 nuclear warheads have been burned in the Megatons to Megawatts program. The are turned in SWU's and used as fuel in light water reactors. Russia sells theirs to a company in the U.S. which distributes them.

Totally amazing video of F5 tornado on the following link.

                                http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/and...-in-canada.asp

The tornado just sits over a field not moving sucking up debris, then it seems to get full and starts to dissipate, then reforms with 3 or more funnels which then combine to one. Pretty impressive footage...
